Samsung KS9000 Calibration Settings

General Settings

Samsung KS9000 Calibration Settings 1

The following pictures depict the settings we use to calibrate the Samsung KS9000. These settings can be used on different content but work particularly good for watching movies. If you want to use the same settings for gaming, make sure to select 'Game' in the 'Special viewing Mode' of the picture menu.

For HDR gaming, once that game is enabled, increase the backlight to max, set the 'Color Space' to 'Auto' and set 'Smart LED' to high.

On Samsung TVs, the 'Movie' picture mode is the closest to our calibration goal. It will give a warm look to the picture. If you find the picture too dull or yellowish, use another picture mode with a colder temperature, like 'Standard'. 'Game' mode is available under 'Special Viewing Mode'.

We set 'Backlight' to 3 for a totally black room. If you find the picture too dark, use a higher value. This won't affect picture quality.

Samsung KS9000 Calibration Settings 3

Turn on 'Digital Clean View' only when watching low quality content like cable TV and DVDs. 'Auto Motion Plus' is the motion interpolation feature that makes motion smoother and give the soap opera effect (SOE). You can remove judder (slight shakiness in movements) in movies by setting 'Auto Motion Plus' to 'Custom' with both sliders to 0. Slightly higher values, like 3-4, will smooth out motion without much of the soap opera effect. 'Smart LED' is the local dimming feature on Samsung TVs. This will darken the blacks on dark scenes. A setting of 'High' will allow brighter highlights but can create big blooming areas arounf bright objects while 'Low' will help the blacks without as much blooming. 'HDMI UHD Color' has to be enabled to get sharper text when using the TV as a PC monitor.

We use 'Color Tone' set to 'Warm2' to get close to our calibration goal but some might prefer 'Warm1' that give a little colder color temperature. 'Color Space' is the wide color gamut feature. It is better to leave the setting to 'Auto' and the TV will match the content being played. If you want to force more saturated color, for cartoons for example, set this to 'Native'. This won't look good for other content not made to benefit from the setting though.

White Balance Settings

The following are the results of the white balance and colorspace calibration on our unit. They are provided for reference, and should not be copied as the calibration values vary per individual unit even for the same model and same size as the TV we reviewed due to manufacturing tolerances. If you want to try them you will need to enter all values shown, as all of them are active at the same time. If you end up with worse picture quality, simply reset them to the default values.
