Yeah, this can be a pain for us. LG and Sony TVs are usually fine, we can calibrate them with the menus open, but on some of them we have to completely leave the menus in order to calibrate them. It can be very time consuming.
Well, at least I know I am not alone! Seems like it may be worth mentioning in the calibration section of the review as a mark against it.

So what was “the problem” that hew knew right away?
Don’t get a soundbar. They don’t really work all that well. Better than your TV’s built-in sound for sure, but not true 5.1.
Don’t get a “home theatre in a box”. Many are junk and for the price of a good one you can do A LOT better for not that much more.
I think 5.1 is enough. Especially if you are just starting out.
If you are willing to do some hookups and wiring, the sound you will get from a decent AV receiver and some good speakers will blow you away.
I would suggest a pair of bookshelf speakers, a center and two satellites from https://www.aperionaudio.com/collections/intimus-speakers
Get a sub from https://www.svsound.com/pages/subwoofers#1000-series
A good starter receiver https://usa.denon.com/us/product/hometheater/receivers/avrs540bt or https://usa.denon.com/us/product/hometheater/receivers/avrx1500h
