Smeg 2-Slice Toaster Toaster Review

Tested using Methodology v1.0

The Smeg 2-Slice Toaster is a high-end toaster that comes in a wide selection of glossy colors and styles. Its slots are longer than most 2-slice toasters' and wide enough to fit thickly-sliced bread. It has settings for bagels and frozen items, plus a reheat mode meant to heat toast without browning it. It's a bit big and heavy for a 2-slice toaster, though.

Our Verdict

N/A Toasting

It's an incredible toaster. It has six preset settings and makes golden brown toast using white sandwich bread on the middle setting. The highest setting can brown items that take longer, like dense bread or bagels, in one cycle. It also toasts bread evenly on both sides and in both slots. However, once the toaster heats up, it produces darker toast on the same setting, so you may want to use a lower setting after the first batch.

Pros
  • Fantastic range.
  • Toasts evenly.
Cons
  • Darker toast after the second batch.
  • N/A Toasting

Differences Between Sizes And Variants

The Smeg 2-Slice Toaster comes in many different colors: Black, Cream, Gold, Matte Black, Matte Champagne, Matte White, Navy Blue, Pastel Blue, Pastel Green, Pink, Red, Rose Gold, Slate Gray, Steel, and White. It also comes in a couple of prints: 'Sicily my Love', a collaboration with Dolce & Gabbana, and 'Union Jack'. We tested the 'Steel' variant, and you can see the label for the unit we tested here

Smeg also makes a long-slot toaster called the Smeg 4-Slice Toaster, which we've tested separately.

If you encounter another variant, let us know in the forums, and we'll update our review.

Compared To Other Toasters

The Smeg 2-Slice Toaster is a high-end toaster that comes in a wide variety of glossy colors, like the Smeg 4-Slice Toaster. Unlike that model, its slots can only fit one slice each, but they're longer than most 2-slice toasters', which is nice for longer slices. It has a fantastic overall performance but tends to make darker bread after the first batch.

However, it doesn't include any way of telling when your toast will be ready, which is a bit disappointing for such an expensive toaster. If that bothers you, the Breville the 'A Bit More' 2 Slice is another premium option with a similar performance with cycle countdown indicators. The Breville's 'Lift and Look' feature also lets you check on your toast mid-cycle, which isn't possible with the Smeg.

There are bagel and frozen settings, as well as a 'reheat' setting, which is selectable on the dial rather than with a button. It lasts for about 25-30 seconds, and it's meant for reheating toast or adding some time to the end of a cycle if you want darker toast.
