Maybe kind of a dumb question here. I remember when I bought this TV that the review mentioned potential stutter due to this TVs low response time. It’s just a bedroom TV, so maybe I haven’t been observant enough, but I’ve never noticed any issues. I keep motion processing features off, generally.
I’m considering getting a Samsung QD-OLED. As we know, OLED also suffers from stuttering. However, I’ve never used an OLED TV. Would the stuttering be at all comparable to the TCL 5 series here? I’m just trying to get an idea of what to expect. If it’s somewhat comparable, it sounds like it would be a non-issue to me. Thanks to anyone out there who may have any insight.
Thanks for reaching out! We suspect that the S95C actually does have a polarizer, but due to differences in QD-OLED structure, if there is one it’s in a much lower layer in the overall panel stack. You’ll get raised blacks with any OLED when too much light hits the screen. With QD-OLEDS, when the blacks are raised, they have a purple tinge. If you’re in a pitch-black environment, the blacks will be displayed perfectly. I hope that helps.
I noticed this at the Best Buy- just a slightly raised black, which reminded me of my old plasma. I’m so curious to know how much ambient light is needed to notice this effect. If I just have a lamp or two on in a room, is this noticeable? Or moreso with a ceiling light or open window?
In regards to the S90C being cooler in color in Game Mode, is there a way to warm it up? I’m always a Warm 1 (sometimes Warm 2 depending on the TV), and color is important to me. (I have a lowly RU7100 that I keep on Warm 1, and a TCL 5 Series that’s a notch below the warmest as well). I feel like on every TV I’ve ever owned, I’ve been able to change color temperature regardless of the image mode.
Call me crazy, but I’m a little confused at the motion score. It says that there’s no ghosting or blurring due to the fast response time, but the image seems pretty blurry? It’s a little disappointing because the motion seems just as blurry as a budget TV I have from several years ago.
I assume you’re referring specifically to burn-in? If that’s the case, I doubt it would cause any issues if you’ve been fine with a plasma for this long and have no retention. There are other differences that you’ll notice when jumping from a plasma to a more recent OLED, though, especially when it comes to motion handling.
Sounds good! I only owned my plasma for a few years but never had any issues on it. I think maybe we had some temporary image retention here and there, but nothing crazy. I’ve been on a budget $600 Samsung 65” for the last several years, so I’m sure anything would be an upgrade from this.
I am experiencing this as well. Super frustrating because the boot up takes so long when Quick Start is turned off
I don’t know if it’ll do any good, but you could definitely contact TCL support. Hopefully if enough people contact them, they might look into it with some sort of fix.
Thank you! I think the only other things that are keeping me on the fence are:
1.) Using this TV for 4k usage on a PC. I’ve read that there is some dithering or something going on that may cause pixels to not display properly. Some say that this isn’t an issue 5 feet away.
2.) Built in motion smoothing for 24p and 30p sources. I’ve read that you can’t disable this, but that it’s not an issue if you’re using a device like an XBox that outputs at 60hz.
These probably aren’t things you come across in reviews but hopefully someone might touch on it. The 50” is currently $399 and I’m thinking of jumping on it for our office TV. Assuming there’s no quality control issues, it sounds like a steal. My wife is just nervous about getting a Hisense or TCL TV.
PS4, Xbox One and Wii U all support 1080p output with internal video upscaling.
DVDs on PS4 and Xbox One are also upscaled.
So you shouldnt have any problems, 480p consoles from early 2000’s though would not look good.
That’s kind of what I thought! That leaves the only thing I’m iffy on the Google TV interface. It sounds like it’s something I could live with but might drive my wife crazy. I heard it can be mitigated by just viewing installed apps on the Home Screen. We also have a Fire Stick which we could use instead.
This thing is $370 at Best Buy currently which sounds kind of crazy? It seems to punch above its weight. I’ve never had a TV with FALD before so it could be a treat for me. I was looking at the Hisense U6G but it sounds like it gives people a hard time with disabling motion smoothing in most picture modes. I just keep artificial motion smoothing off, so that’s a dealbreaker for me.
Thank you, you guys are the best! We might be looking into the Sony X91J at 85”, which I realize is kid of a reissued x900h, so I’ll have to see if that might be something we might prefer over the X85J. Time for tons of more trips to the stores for some homework, lol. Thanks again!
