Heads up, the double image due to 120hz flicker is REALLY distracting.

RTINGS really should give a lower score in the gaming section for TVs that use 120hz PWM dimming in Game Mode.

This TV doesn’t deserve such a high score (7.8) for gaming. The LG QNED80 has a score that’s way lower, and the 120Hz flicker is mentioned as one of the cons, while here it says nothing.

Also, having a 9.9 in the flicker free section is definitely undeserved.

    Hi aftercities,

Thanks for taking the time to reach out with your feedback!

Our current flicker test is focused on movie/TV show motion performance in our recommended SDR settings. Although we list the flicker in Game Mode, it’s not accounted for in the test’s scoring. I understand that this can lead to confusion about why many TVs score highly in this test despite the possibility of them being problematic in other picture modes.

The good news is that we’re planning to completely overhaul this test later this year in order to make it more representative of a TV’s performance overall, not specifically for our recommended SDR settings. If you have suggestions about what you’d like to see in the next iteration of the Flicker test, we’re all ears! :)

Let us know should you have any other suggestions or questions for us.

    Regards

Hello Pascal, thank you for your reply.

That does explain why the TV has 9.9 score in the flicker free section, but I still think 7.8 is a bit high for the gaming section, given that most content is 60Hz, and the image duplication is absolutely terrible.

And yes, I will definitely be giving some suggestions.

I do think RTINGS should use its influence to somehow “pressure” manufacturers away from 120hz flicker, even if only by giving lower grades.

For those of us that are sensitive to this, it absolutely destroys our eyes, and in many countries like mine there are no flicker free options available at all.

The worst part is that in VRR Mode the TV flickers at a higher frequency which doesn’t cause discomfort, so it’s not even a hardware limitation, just a design decision.

I do have this tv, 65 inches version and somehow the local dimming is insanely bad. Literally, the whole local dimming zone lit up literally illuminating in bright darker scenes. I’ve seen from your test that disabling local dimming improve the situation. How to do so tho? There’s no option AFAIK. Thanks a lot

Local dimming on Samsung TVs can only be done from the service menu, which requires a special remote (you can buy them on amazon). We don’t recommend doing this, though, as there’s a reason the service menu is locked down and you can permanently brick your TV if you change the wrong thing.
