I just purchased the LG UR8000 at Costco but the viewing angle is terrible. At almost any angle the colors are all washed out. Would be interested in your evaluation.
So I’ve decided to purchase the 86” version of this TV. It’s $999.99 at Costco from today until October 22nd.
I’m replacing my Hisense U8G 65”. That TV will go down to my home theater to replace a 2012 Panasonic plasma 50”. I only sit 7-8’ from the TV down there. In the main living room I’m about 13’ away.
Anyway, the 86” has a few differences from the rest of the lineup. It offers 120Hz instead of 60Hz, has the a7 processor instead of a5, has ai picture pro, one additional HDMI port that supports 2.1 standard. And I think I’m missing something else that it supports with gaming.
All in all, I think it might receive a higher score if rtings were to test this size. I believe it is one of the best budget (large) TV’s available.
Obviously, anyone looking for the best will want to double or triple their budget but I think I’ll be happy.
I was very happy with using rtings to guide me to buying my U8G and my older TCL 5-series.
Edited 1 year ago: Had the end date of price wrong.
Have had the LG 65 inch 7700 Costco TV and couple years or so….great. Directv App just use the LG handheld for everything. yesterday bought 75" LG UR8000 AUA Costco. DOES NOT HAVE THE DIRECTV APP to use. Without the App download limited on what I can do and i need the LG handheld (Netflix/Amazon) and I need the Directv handheld for local TV…changing channels etc.
Directv box is set to HDMI 1.
Secondly, when I turn an TV I get the LG master screen of options. Then I have to click HDMI 1 to get to Local Directv (because the is no APP avaible. I wish I could just urn on TV and the HDMI 1 local TV comes on.
Hi, I have a LG 86UR81 TV and it doesn’t support VRR.
Hi! Just to make sure, are you connecting your VRR enabled device into the TV’s HDMI 2.1 port? Plus, we didn’t specifically test the 86" model, but you might have other options than on the 65" model we tested under ‘HDMI Settings’ and ‘External Devices’ to enable the TV’s VRR and high frame rate support. Are you getting the full 4k @ 120Hz out of the TV?
Hi.
Connected HDMI 2.1
HDMI Settings - No VRR setting
TV 4k @ 120Hz is there, on PS5 and PC
photo 1photo 2photo 3photo 4
There is no VRR setting in game optimizer
I watched on youtube TV LG 86UQ80 there was VRR.
I think they just removed this function.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention, we’ll update our review to specify that the 86" LG UR81 performs differently than the LG UR80!
My lg soundbar connected to my lg ur8000. The soundbar once in awhile flashes the Mic In status n no sound. I read I can disable the Mic In from setting Audio Guidance but ur8000 do not have the Audio Guidance setting. How can i rectify this issue. Tqvm
Its frustrating that LG doesn’t publish panel type in their public specifications. The display specifications dot com web site reports that the 75" and 86" are IPS, while the others are a VA panel. Is that possibly true? Thank you so much for this site and any info.

Hi! That website in particular has published erroneous information in the past, so you know what they say: careful about what you read on the internet. Ultimately we have no clear confirmation from LG about the specific panel in each model size. Sadly, it is common practice from manufacturers to use different panel types in different model sizes and to then be cagey about releasing that information to the public.
I just purchased an 55inch LG UR8000 from costco, and took a one second exposure of the 24p judder test, and it failed. This was playing from a laptop over HDMI.
Does this mean my TV is defective in some way, or is it possible the result is wrong here? Really interested to stream from a computer without judder, but seems impossible for now, even with the anti judder setting turned up to 10.
I Test 55UR80006LJ Made In Egypt And Also Indonesia And I Can Conform That This TV Has VA Panel.
I Need To Append This, These TVs Also has IPS Panel! It’s Strange But True.
Hi I have just purchased a LG UR80006LJ tv , wondering if these tvs come with a protective film over the tv screen that needs to be taken off before use, could anyone help?

Hi, thank you for reaching out. Most new TVs do come with a protective film that should be removed before usage. However, since it’s been a while since we unboxed it, we’re not sure if our unit had a protective film. If it does, you should be able to notice it, as it’s usually labeled. Hopefully, this helps.
Does your calibrated settings for this TV apply to the IPS variants? In our country its UR8050 and UR8150 are IPS except for the 50 inch.
Hello and thanks for reaching out. The general picture settings will be mostly the same. We don’t recommend using our calibration values even for people with the exact same model since those values differ per individual unit, so that difference will likely be even greater on a model with a different panel type. You can always try them out and if you end up with a worse picture, you can just reset them. I hope that helps!
Since there seems to be a lot of conflicting info about the panel type on this TV, I wanted to add that I think they use an IPS panel for the 65” version in the US (65UR8000AUA).
First, I chatted with LG and asked for the panel type, and they said it was IPS.
Second, BJs had this TV lined up alongside about 10 other TVs, and I thought the 65” LG UR8000 had one of the best pictures when viewing at an angle (indicative of an IPS panel). I also did the tap test on this and several other TVs. The 65” LG did not flash at all, which would indicate an IPS panel. Interestingly, the 70” version did flash with the tap test, so I think that version is a VA panel, but my understanding is that is due to the fact that there are no IPS panels available in that size.
Since Rtings seems to be the gold standard for TV reviews, it would be great if they could clear up this confusion.

Hello! We tested the 65UR8000AUA and our unit definitely had a VA panel with a narrow viewing angle. There’s a possibility that LG made some 65-inch units with an IPS panel, but that would be surprising since it’s very rare for a manufacturer to switch the type of panel used on a current model. Thanks for reaching out.
I just helped a friend install the 86” 86UR8000AUA.
Here is the spec sheet that is different from the other sizes.
This size supports 120hz BUT NOT VRR implying that the HDMI 2.1 ports (Inputs 3&4 ) do not meet the full 2.1 specification.

Please update the review if possible.
Yeah you’re right, we’re updating the review now. Thanks for letting us know.
Just wanted to say thanks for this article on calibration. The setting changes made my experience go from “well, you have to expect crap when you buy a budget TV” to “wow, I’m SO HAPPY with this purchase” Thanks, it made a huge difference!
Hi Can I know what is the difference between UR8000 vs UR7500? is it significant difference?
thank you

Hello!
Help with personalized buying advice is something our experts offer only via our insider forums. We do have lots of self-service tools and recommendation articles that should be helpful as well though!
Will this TV automatically transcode supported surround codec to 5.1 audio via toslink?
Hey Chipoli! as you can see in our audio passthrough section of the review, the TV supports Dolby Digital 5.1 over optical but not DTS, Hope that helps!

Update: We changed ‘Judder-Free 24p via 60p’ and ‘Judder-Free 24P via 60i’ from ‘Yes’ to ‘No’ in the 24p Judder section since using motion interpolation doesn’t count as judder-free.
RTING can you 100% confirm 65" and or 55" are VA panels? Need to know for a purchase
I think I already answered you on twitter, but answering here for visibility. We can only confirm for the 65", which is definitely VA. For the 55" and other sizes, we don’t know for sure as LG has been mixing panel types on these models. The only way we could confirm it would be to buy one.

Hi Rtings. We are looking at a 55UR8000AUA at Costco and Samsung did confirm it and the 65” are Va panels so that’s great but had a question. We watch LOTS of old TV show DVD’s and worry the 5.5 “upscale” score will be terrible for us. Would the 55” be better than 65” for this? Our last TV you have a score of 7 on upscale and it was great

TY keep up the wonderful work!!
Our old upscaling test isn’t comparable at all to the new sharpness processing one, so your old TV’s score of 7 isn’t measuring the same thing as the new test. Unfortunately, yes, watching DVDs will look pretty bad on either of these TVs. The 55" would likely look slightly better, not because it has better processing, but because it’s a smaller panel, so the upscaling artifacts won’t be as noticeable.
There’s one big caveat to the above, though: it will depend on what you’re using to watch those DVDs. Many recent disc players have built-in upscaling, so depending on the quality of your player this may or may not be as much of an issue.
Just got this TV in 55". Pretty nice picture and black for cheap LED
Can someone explain whey I have no “backlight” setting? Seems most LG I looked at did but this one does not, at least not in normal picture settings.
Did the tested 65" have backlight?
Also, if the “tap” test definitive when testing to see if I have a VA or IPS panel?
The setting to control the backlight intensity on this TV is called Panel Brightness, not ‘backlight’. You have to go in to the picture settings menu, then brightness, then you’ll see the setting mentioned, as shown here.
Tap test isn’t definitive, no. If you have a phone with a decent camera you can usually get a decent enough photo of the subpixels, that’s the best way to determine if it’s IPS or VA.

TY RTINGS is the best!! I have mine at 54 and it looks nice! So lower brightness means more longevity out of my TV, more than likely correct? Does high contrast do anything in that regards?

Lowering the brightness of your TV might extend it’s life, but there are lots of other possible failure points that could still cause problems down the road, and there’s not much you can do about it. The contrast setting is a picture processing setting, it simply adjusts how the TV processes the incoming image, it doesn’t change anything on the panel itself, so this won’t extend your TV’s life at all.
We’ve purchased the product and are waiting for it to arrive in our lab.
