It’s a shame the review categories don’t capture the experience of using this monitor. Yes, as a display panel, it’s a very pretty monitor, but it feels like a monitor that believes it’s a Smart TV, wants to behave like a Smart TV, and doesn’t want to be a gaming monitor.
There are so many little things with this monitor that are disappointing:
Needing to use the remote to turn the monitor on and off (Even my OLED TV has buttons in the back)
FPS display? Nope, my 8 year old Acer Predator can do this no problem, but there’s no meaningful options on this expensive monitor.
Virtual aim point? Not something I typically use, but my Acer’s was occasionally useful, but the G8 is a few comically large green and red presets that obstruct the screen and are useless.
And…that’s it. Aside from a Virtual Aim Point, the only other options you get are Screen Ratio, Minimap Zoom, Sound Output and More Settings.
You can set the brightness you want, but every time you pull up the UI, which seems to happen every time I turn the monitor on, it displays the Samsung monitor UI elements at 100% brightness despite me dialing the brightness way down because I’m using it in a dark room.
I very rarely get a brief moment of a garbled mess on the display despite using the DP cable that came with the display. My 3090 Ti never did this with my older Acer.
Add into that the horrible headaches I’ve had trying to get Samsung support to help and I have this laundry list of issues with Samsung and this monitor that I’m trying to reconcile with my agreement that the actual display is very visually impressive.
Ultimately, I feel like I bought a Smart TV disguised as a gaming monitor, or at least a gaming monitor that insists on acting like a Smart TV instead of a monitor, and between those UI and user experience issues and Samsung support, I am returning this monitor.
I do want to buy and keep an OLED monitor, so I’ll be on the look out for OLED monitors during Black Friday, but Samsung is not a brand I will look at going forward.
While I do miss some of the simplicity of a regular monitor, this monitor does things other monitors do not.
You can use the button under the middle of the screen to turn it on/off btw.
Native tv apps with hdr support is huge+
E-arc is massive if you use soundbars or home theater.
You can hit the middle remote button for a quick fps/refresh rate check.
Usuable speakers
Wifi updates is amazing.
I can cast audio to my samsung soundbar in another room.
Im sure there is more.
Oled tvs have been a better buy for a few years now (lg c series). This monitor closes the gap imo and offers the same experience in a more desk friendly package.
Can anyone verify that the DP dropouts are gone? I had mine for 4 days and contacted Samsung because my dropouts were frequent and they told me to take it to a service center. It’s been there for 2 weeks :-/ They’re probably just burning it in with a static Blu-Ray menu screen…
I’ve had 1 drop out since updating. Used to get 1 a day.
Samsung have released firmware version 1004. According to some support folks it does the following:
Improve intermittent blackouts with DP connection
Improves an intermittent noise with the PS5
Improved readability of PC input conditions
Improved automatic change of peak brightness menu value
Improved screen change error when selecting ‘Normal’ color reproduction
Improvement of infinite loading of Tizen apps
Improvement of Smartthings app ‘My Content’
I’m curious to see testing of what numbers 4 and 5 did.
Normal color space did nothing before. Now it seems like a midpoint between the undersaturated Auto and oversaturated Native. Would love to know if it helps in the color calibration at all.
Warranty is actually 3 years. Register the monitor and check under your registered devices it should show 3 years as the end date for warranty coverage.
Access went up 3 days ago, the new firmware came out 2 days ago. What do you think?
All I heard was the VRR flicker portion was retested and will be updated.
Just wanted to make sure they were aware of the update before publishing the final review…
I also noticed a colour accuracy difference in non HDR game mode.

Is there any added input lag by plugging in a PC/game console directly to the sound bar?

Was this review completed with the 1001 firmware or the new 1003 firmware?
