4k@120hz G-Sync VRR HDR over HDMI 2.1 works flawlessly, and personal thoughts of my 65" as a monitor

My TV came out of the box with Firmware 1054.1, I haven’t connected to internet to check for any updates because it’s perfect as is.

I have the Q70A 65", which is replacing my KU6300 50" I was worried backlight bleed may be an issue coming from a full array model, but this TV’s edge backlight is so well implemented that the black uniformity is actually better than my old model with full array.

Since 2020 and even 2021 models with HDMI 2.1 have been pretty hit-or-miss on their coverage of functionality I thought it most important to cover that this TV provides all features important to me, 4k@120hz, G-Sync VRR, and HDR , SIMULTANEOUSLY with no issues, no signal loss, no setting loss when turning off TV or PC; everything just works how it should out of the box.

Connected to my RTX 3080 with a certified HDMI 2.1 cable on HDMI 4 port, just had to turn on Input Signal Plus for HDMI 4, and then Game Mode and then Game HDR. In Nvidia control panel, under Change Resolution I chose 3840 x 2160 @ 120Hz under the PC category (scroll down the list to see it). Made sure it was set to RGB, 10bpc, and Full dynamic range, sometimes getting these settings to stick takes undoing and redoing them.

I clicked on the Display Tab, which activated the “Set up G-SYNC” category. In Set up G-SYNC under 1. I checked the box for Enable, chose “Enable for windowed and fullscreen mode” under 3. I checked “Enable settings for selected display model” and applied.

Under “Manage 3D Settings” category, GSYNC Compatible was now showing as already chosen for “Monitor Technology” and I enabled Vertical Sync using the “Fast” option.

I’ve tested multiple games, Nvidia’s Pendulum Demo, AMD Windmill demo, without any tearing whatsoever at sweeping framerates of 20-120Hz. Though when framerate drops below ~80 there is some flickering noticeable in the pendulum demo because in the Q70A’s Game Mode the backlight is flickering at 120hz all the time. But this flicker was not noticeable in other demos or games so maybe it’s just specific to that program’s choice of monotone sky color.

HDR video in VLC, and Youtube both work flawlessly after enabling HD Color in windows display settings as well. Really great HDR experience though at the very very brightest parts of a scene there is a little clipping in the highlights because of this TV’s max ~550nits brightness. I would say this TV still has one of the best HDR viewing experiences outside of OLED because of it’s amazing native contrast and uniformity, I would even go so far as to say the blacks being so dark without having to rely on local dimming as a crutch probably places this TV ahead of much brighter sets in terms of HDR performance. There’s such a minimal amount of highlight clipping compared to the blooming that comes with local dimming that it’s a worthwhile trade-off as clipped highlights don’t appear unnatural when you see it, whereas blooming ALWAYS looks unnatural when you see it.

Some other points of using this TV so far: I don’t plan to use built in streaming apps, and since I haven’t connected it to the internet there are ZERO ads, or suggestions for content or apps. It’s honestly great to not see a single branded image anywhere on the TV, though I suspect from RTINGS review that if you connect to the internet, you will start to get ads in the menus. But I’m loving the clean menu without accepting the terms of use for apps or connecting to internet.

BGR pixel array is not a big deal, in windows ClearType makes all text appear perfectly and I can’t see any artifacts whatsoever, even when pixel-peeping.

Uniformity is amazing, if you are 2 feet away from the screen (way too close) and have the whole screen a solid color, you can see about 1 square inch of brightness loss in the corners. But outside of that contrived scenario, the screen has a beautiful uniform display.

The one annoyance with this TV is that it didn’t come with VESA hardware, it’s 4 screws they really should’ve included. In the Manual it lists 11-13mm M8 (yes a range of length for some reason?) as the correct size but I am using the 15mm ones with washers that my wall mount came with and they don’t cause problems since the washers make them shorter in practice.

One other oddity is that since the remote charges using a solar panel which is on the back, you have to turn it upside down when not using it to keep it charged. They should’ve put the panel on the front Probably won’t matter much since it should last a very long time even without any charge. I spent a full day messing with settings and the battery level (indicated in tv software menu) has been at 71% the whole time. And if you NEED a charge (such as having the TV in a basement with no sunlight) there is a USB-C port on the remote too.
