Q9FN Flickering

I have noticed that when I watch films on the Samsung Q9FN (2018) through Fire TV or play games with Xbox One X, in dark scenes the bright portion of the screen occasionally ‘flickers’. This flickering is not so pronounced as to bother me, but it is noticeable as I sit very close to the TV. The best way to describe this flickering is, imagine the light emanated onto a dark surface from the fluctuating light of a candle.

This happens with both SDR and HDR content, but it seems more pronounced with 4K HDR content. The TV is calibrated pretty much according to the RTINGS recommendations. Btw, I use Standard picture mode with high contrast enhancer for films etc, and Game mode with low contrast enhancer for gaming. This flickering has occurred since I have had the Q9FN. Originally I assumed it is an artefact of the content, but I am beginning to wonder.

Can this be caused by the TV’s local dimming or something else? Is it normal or is there a problem with my panel? And is there a way to do anything to reduce it? Again, it is not really bothersome but I am a bit paranoid.

Another thing to add is AI picture. I had a 2019 sm8600 with the A7 gen2. And that tv was second to none in daylight or bright color scenes. The AI picture setting boosted it a little and gave it a 3d effect. Then I upgraded to the 2020 nano 90 and the AI setting was not in the menu. Now this time it is in the menu again. It seems to work on 4k blu ray discs. It enhances already sharp closeups of faces. And adds a little pop to the image. But it is overly aggressive on lower definition content like antenna tv channels and some streaming. So it is hit or miss. I only turn it for 1080p or 4k content. You can definitely tweak the settings to rival a 3d tv experience. With a 4k disc, AI settings on, dejudder turned up and dynamic contrast on the tv can produce a very realistic image.

It absolutely has the new a7. I have owned the nano cell tv from the past few years and the menu is redesigned but has a7 features like an AI settings menu and the better motion handling menu for dejudder and deblur. There is also a lot of audio options for Earc and connections to new LG soundbars. I think the confusion comes from only the 86" having the A7. The past few years all the 82 and 86" LG TVs have the alpha processor. I’m pretty sure its direct lit. That’s what the manual says. When I turn the backlight up and down its pretty uniform. I might have gotten lucky with no dirty screen effect. There is one little light bleed spot in the upper corner. I only see it once in a while on a full black screen if I’m sitting in a certain position. No local dimming. It has full screen dimming for Dolby vision IQ. So if its a full bright scene it can add extra brightnes. And in full dark scenes it can dim everything.

Something else to add is when watching 4k content that supports Dolby vision The tv can give a little more. The Dolby vision IQ gives the image a little more realism. The newer TVs seem to put everything into making 4k look the best. Which makes sense. There is so much information in a 4k uhd blu ray. Most TVs can’t bring out the full potential of a disc. So the Dolby vision IQ helps by optimizing what the tv can do.
