Do you recommend 720 or 1080p tv if viewing standard definition only?

Need to replace my CRT tv. Internet is only 4 to 5 mps, so streaming content will be standard definition. Only other viewing source is over the air broadcast. Like the TCL because of Roku. Looking at 43" size. Seems like buying 4K is spending money on something I canโ€™t utilize. Salesman recommends 4K in order to get latest techonology, and says upscaling will make everything okay. What do you recommend?

This is one of the worst looking LED/OLED TVs that Iโ€™ve ever laid eyes on. Iโ€™ve done everything I can possibly think of with the settings and I got it look better(it was so bad my jaw literally dropped), but It still looks awful, like pretty dang awful.

I have a 7 year old Sony Bravia 4k LED that looks leagues and bounds better and let me tell youโ€ฆ that TV is starting to go out and the backlights are shining thru in yellow spots that you can see with certain solid color backgrounds pretty well. How?
