About the selection of the jbl authentics 500 as the top pick.. I don’t have any of them and have only listened to your binaural recordings and some youtube recordings, so take this with a grain of salt, but it seems like the authentics 500 is a more focused sound vs the sonos 300 that seems to spread the sound better in a room. Also the 500 seems to lack a little in the high frequencies. I don’t know if you can correct that with the eqralization. The sonos 300 seems to have a more balanced sound overall. I’m trying to decide between the two as they cost the same in Spain, but right now I’m leaning to the sonos just because it seems to be pretty close in sound quality, with a sound that I seem to like a little more, and with significantly smaller dimensions.

It’s a tough call, since these are both really premium speakers. We also found that the Sonos Era 300 had a more balanced sound out-of-the-box, though the nice thing about the JBL is that you can always use its sound customization tools to make up for that. The Sonos also offers a better soundstage performance, which is likely what you’re noticing when you mention that it seems to spread sound better in a room. At the end of the day, the way that we experience sound is rather subjective, so you may like one speaker over the other. Happy shopping!

  4. Update: The Klipsch The Three II has been discontinued, so we’ve removed it as a Notable Mention and replaced it with the Google Nest Audio. We’ve checked to ensure all other picks remain up-to-date and in stock.

I finally bought the sonos ERA 300. It really does sound good. I’m enjoying music much more now (previously had a RIVA small speaker). But It’s really finicky with wifi connection. I also have a WiiM mini airplay connected to an old digital piano and it does hold the connection much better even if it’s placed in a much worse place (in the basement).

Edited 1 year ago: (add info about previous speaker for reference)
  6. Update: We’ve checked the prices of all our picks and ensured they’re still the best choices, but no changes have been made.
