Hi RTINGS!
After extensive research on your site, I was convinced this was the best budget TV I could buy that would have the best out-of-box calibration. The color and look of the TV is really nice, especially compared to the absolute junker I purchased (and promptly returned) last Black Friday: Philips 7000 series 4K Ultra HD LED Google TV (55PUL7552/F7).
I am wanting to like this TV because I do not want to go through another warranty/return process like I did with the Philips, but there are some things that are just killing our experience with this TV:
1) JUDDER
The judder on this TV is just horrendous. I’m not yet great with the technical jargon for TVs, but I believe it is judder that I am experiencing in panning scenes and with all sports, especially the football I’ve tried to watch on Amazon Prime and on the ESPN app. Another example is watching Planet Earth on HBO Max. Any kind of panning shot has so many noticeable “hang-ups”.
I followed the RTINGS.com calibration settings for this TV and it seems to me that the video actually looks worse for most content when the Motion Enhancement settings are turned off. I’ve experimented with all of the motion enhancement options, including tinkering with the Custom setting, all without removing the judder.
2) LAGGY INTERFACE & RESTRICTIVE APPS ONLY MODE
I thought the judder issue could be due to our internet connection, or the specific apps on the Google TV platform, however our wifi connection where this TV is located should be sufficient: ~100 Mb/s on 2.4 GHz, and ~300 Mb/s on 5 GHz (more on the 5 GHz connection later…). I have reinstalled different apps, for example, Amazon Prime (with their notoriously bad broadcasting of Thursday Night Football), but to no avail on removing the aforementioned judder.
The Google interface seems very slow at times, especially for the first 10 minutes after turning the TV on. I definitely would not rate the interface smoothness as “very high”. At times it is OK, but if you scroll too quickly there is almost always lag. The “apps only” mode seems much smoother, but if you use this mode, you can no longer use the voice function of the remote. I find this absolutely ridiculous and I’ve seen a lot of complaints about this on Reddit regarding Google forcing you to use their interface if you want the convenience of voice control.
3) 5 GHz WIFI CONNECTION ISSUES
As another user pointed out in a post on this Discussion board, our TV does not allow you to remain connected via a 5 GHz wifi connection. Our 5 GHz signal shows as Good or Excellent, yet the TV will constantly report that it has disconnected from wifi if you opt to use a 5 GHz network.
I am open to any suggestions for further calibrating the TV, but I’m pretty much at my wits’ end with this one. I don’t want a TV where I have to adjust the motion enhancement settings every time I watch something on a different app or via Live TV.
I think maybe I’d just prefer a Roku TV, where the use of the voice control doesn’t come with any stipulations. RTINGS, you guys should mention this type of thing in your review! I’m sure many people would want to know that ahead of time.
RTINGS - do you have any suggestions for a TV with great out-of-box color settings but without the surprising amount of judder of this Hisense? I would definitely pay in the ballpark of $100 more to avoid these kinds of issues.
Thanks!
