11 months ago I bought an ex demo, Samsung Q80r and last month it stopped working! Luckily I had a warranty even though it was ex demo.
Samsung said they cannot fix nor replace it, so they are giving me my money back.
However, as it was ex demo it had a nice discount, I picked it up for $662. So now Iโm looking for a replacement, but I donโt think I have quite the budget to necessarily match it for the same quality newer models, but I can stretch a bit further, to say $1000.
Iโm thinking about replacing it with a Sony, possibly an LG. (I live in Thailand so its only Sony, Samsung and LG that use the same model numbers as USA, so canโt compare reviews for other brands.)
Looking at the available Sony models in my budget and their reviews on Rtings, the below are closest in quality to the Q80r, I can pick these up for around $1000 - $1070:
Sony X90J Sony X95H Sony X95G Sony X90H
I watch mostly 1080/4k HDR Netflix and 4k HDR Blu Rays.
No Gaming, a small smattering of sport.
I can make my room either dark or sunny but I did appreciate how well the Q80r handled reflections.
I put my TVs in Movie mode and turn off all optimisations, as I like my movies to look as they were shot with no smoothing or artefacts and life like colours.
With my Q80r it had terrible stutter/judder during motion when watching 4k. It could only be removed with motion interpolation, but that brought on the soap opera affect which I cannot stand! So Iโd add just a touch of the smoothing with the sliders to make the judder slightly more bearable.
Iโve heard Sony handle motion better without so much soap opera affect, but they donโt seem to score well here for motion; but then again you guys said the Q80r had remarkable motion handling and I thought it was terrible!
Which of these models would you suggest as the best replacement for a Q80r, or perhaps some other option?
Hey there,
Thanks for taking the time to share this information with us. Iโm going to pass this along to our display team to consider making any necessary changes on our end and weโll also keep an eye out for more reports of this. Thanks again!
I just bought a 43" UQ8000 from Costco, with a 12/2022 manufacture date, and it is IPS. Pixels are RGB. Iโm using it as a computer monitor and text is clear. Picture is in Game mode.
I previously bought a Hisense 43" A65H and it was VA, with BGR pixels and unclear text.
