Hey there,
Thanks for reaching out. Without testing the 86’‘ size variant, we really can’t say for sure whether or not it’s direct lit or if it has local dimming. Since we don’t have our own data, we wouldn’t want to speculate and risk giving you incorrect information. However, I can say that it has an IPS panel (because all 86’‘ TVs have an IPS panel)!

I downloaded the online manual a while back. I don’t remember where I found it though. it says direct lit. From my own experience watching it everyday, it looks direct lit. No local dimming. There is no option for it in the menu and I never see anything resembling local dimming when watching. It does have Dolby vision IQ. So it has a type of screen dimming. There appears to be little sensors in the upper corners. Like tiny reddish squares in the bezel connected by a reddish line going around the perimeter. Something else to add is every nano cell tv I owned has a different type of reflection on the screen when its off and natural light is shining on it. This one separates the light into rainbow lines like a crystal. It does have good viewing angles. I wonder if they restructured the nano layer or if its some kind of finish. It looks sharper instead of glossy. It seems like this years tvs have better gradient but worse color gamut. From the reviews it looks like Sony as well.

The best buy website is the other website besides rtings I use to see info and get reviews on specific tv sizes. They are not always 100% accurate. But more so than others. If you go in store you can also see the box the tv comes in. My box says a7 gen 4 right on it as well as other info that is elusive online.
