Hi,
I have a GTX 1070 with an available DVI-D and DisplayPort out available. Will either of these work to connect to this television? What is the best way to connect it? I’d like to game on it if possible.
Best, Kurt
Just to confirm, you have “Instant Game Response” enabled on the TV, and HDMI Ultra HD Deep Color enabled for that port?
Weirdly enough on some of LG’s website there is a comment that “VRR support varies by inches” but on other it does not show, see two opposite examples: https://www.lg.com/us/tvs/lg-75SM9070PUA-4k-uhd-tv https://www.lg.com/ca_en/tvs/lg-75SM9070PUA
Could someone help be by finding out what that means?
Yes on both. The input is also set as “console” Could it be that the 75" (75SM9000PVA) does not support VRR while the other sizes do?
That appears to be the case. As you pointed out, LG’s website states in the fine print that “VRR support varies by inches.”, which is strangely written, but would imply that some sizes don’t support VRR. We had seen previous reports that the larger sizes weren’t G-SYNC compatible, but we had assumed they still worked with HDMI Forum VRR.

Can they really do that? write a strange comment (on some of the websites) and that make it ok to write VRR support when only half of the size support that?
Can we confirm with LG which sizes support VRR and which don’t?
I will. You have to add a warning on the review isn’t it always the other way around? the smaller and cheaper sizes should have less features enables
Haha, yeah, it’s usually the other way around. We don’t quite get it, either. Adding a note to the review now, but it might take some time for you to see it.
LG response: “In response to your message, please be advised that according to the product page of the 75SM9070PUA manufactured to be used here in the US (https://www.lg.com/us/tvs/lg-75SM9070PUA-4k-uhd-tv), the unit supports 2K/4K HFR, ALLM, and eARC and is yet to support VRR.”

Thanks!
After a few angry discussions with costumer support I was offered to pay an additional amount and get a 2020 Nano90 replacement. Does the VRR work on the 75" nano90? The SM9000 is a very mediocre TV (horrible blacks, poor brightness, blooming), will the nano90 improve these problems? How much money is justified to pay for this replacement?

We haven’t tested the Nano90 yet, but we expect it to be pretty much identical to the SM9000. The issues you’ve noticed with black levels and blooming are very likely to still be there, as this is a common issue with IPS displays. We don’t know if the 75" version of the Nano90 supports VRR, but LG’s website doesn’t have the disclaimers it did on the SM9000, so we suspect it does.
The support checked and the Nano90 does support VRR, I have two options to choose from: I can add 500$ more and get the nano90 or slightly less and get the Samsung Q70T. I didn’t plan on spending the extra money but I rather spend more than keep the SM9000 which is just mediocre (as I wrote before), I saw a couple of reviews that claim that the nano90 is a big improvement. VRR was important since we play XBOX and plan on getting the new XBOX on Christmas. What would you choose?

Personally, I’d go with the Q70T, or even better, a Q70R if you can find one (should be about the same price). I definitely wouldn’t spend $500 more for the Nano90.
And Adam, what do you think of the qe55q90r for PS 5? There is no HDMI 2.1 and VRR but does it really matter? It would be a good thing if most games are already achieving 4k @ 60fps… So hdmi 2.1 don’t really use full no?

For PS5 HDMI-VRR may not matter, the bulk of the games Sony previewed in its PS5 reveal were 30FPS (according to Digital Foundry taking video stream into account). Sony is most likely following its PS4 strategy of lavish visuals on third person open world games running at 30FPS.
Microsoft is the one who has been making noise about high frame rates for which VRR is essential as there is no way they will be able to maintain a consistent 120FPS.

Yeah, it remains to be seen if the extra bandwidth of HDMI 2.1 will really be necessary for AAA games, or if it’ll mainly be simpler indy games targetting 4k @ 120Hz. We also don’t know for sure what the PS5 will support. It might support HDMI Forum VRR, or FreeSync, or maybe even no VRR at all.

OK, thanks for your answers guys. I will not make a competitive game on console anyway but ultimately, the qe55q90r has the VRR on one of its ports or not? (I have my ps4 pro plugging in and I don’t even know).

The Q90R support VRR on all ports, but your PS4 Pro doesn’t. The source has to also support a compatible VRR format for it to work.
