Hi DanVonCarr,
I can confirm that the 50’‘ version definitely has a VA panel, though I can’t say for sure whether or not it is direct lit. I tried looking into it, but couldn’t find anything conclusive. If I happen to stumble across anything, I’ll be sure to let you know. Hope this helps! :)

Thanks! Also do you have any info on the CJ variants? some countries have X79J listed as a variant of the 80J but I think they’re the same.

As far as we know, the CJ variants are Costco/Sam’s Club models that should perform the same. However it’s worth mentioning that they come with Sony’s new ‘Bravia CORE’ streaming service. (According to Sony, this can stream movies up to 80 mbps). We’re not sure about the X79, but we do know that in Italy it’s called the X80JP, and in Europe the X80J is being sold alongside the X81J, which should have the same specs! Hope this helps! :)

Would you expect HDR peak brightness to be any higher on the 50’‘ with a VA panel? I know VA panels tend to have better contrast ratios, but is there any relationship with HDR peak brightness? Better contrast would good, but poor HDR peak brightness would still be a deal breaker for me.

Wondering this myself but I would asume that even if the brightness is the same a better contrast can deliver a better HDR experience overall. I’m sure Dylan can provide a much more detailed answer. I’m waiting for the X85J review hoping it has better brightness and overall picture quality and not just 2.1 ports.
Hey all!
So, we don’t actually expect the type of panel to affect brightness if it uses the same backlighting. Unfortunately, it’s tough to say for sure here as we haven’t tested the other sizes. If I come across any other information that I think would be helpful here, I’ll be sure to post it in this thread! :)

What is the subpixel layout of the X80J 50" VA panel?

Hey there,
Unfortunately, we haven’t tested the 50’‘ variant of this TV, so I really can’t say for sure. However, most modern 4k TVs with a VA panel have a BGR subpixel structure, so it’s like BGR. But again, this is just an educated guess as we haven’t tested it! :)
