If you have pets that shed, you're probably vacuuming more often than most people, which makes the convenience of a cordless vacuum especially appealing. Being able to grab it off a dock and quickly clean up hair without untangling a power cord makes it much easier to stay on top of daily shedding. The best options are lightweight, have an effective filtration system, come with an array of attachments well-suited to handling pet hair, and feature floorhead designs that are capable of lifting pet hair from hard-to-clean surfaces like carpeting.

We've tested over 110 vacuum cleaners, and below are our recommendations for the best cordless stick vacuums for pet hair. These recommendations are based not only on their pet hair cleaning performance on different surfaces but also on their air filtration and price. Here's a quick rundown of what to consider using our lab testing and scoring:

  • Pet Hair Pickup: A score of 7.5+ for our Pet Hair Pickup test reflects good or better single-pass pet hair clearing performance.
  • Floorhead Design: Floorheads with bristled rollers are good for removing pet hair from carpets, but soft or combo rollers can improve pet hair pickup on hard surfaces.
  • Additional Attachments: Air-driven mini turbo brushes are great all-purpose tools for dealing with pet hair, motorized mini brushes provide even better pickup but are rare and typically bulky, and straight-suction upholstery nozzles will do in a pinch.
  • Particle Filtration Performance: A score of 8.0+ for our Particle Filtration test indicates effective allergen control for pet dander.

Check out our buyer's guide at the bottom of the article for more details. For more buying recommendations, look at our list of the best cordless vacuums, the best vacuums for pet hair, and the best vacuums for long hair.

  1. Best Cordless Vacuum For Pet Hair

The best cordless vacuum for pet hair we've tested is the Dyson V15 Detect. It offers fantastic pet hair pickup on carpets and furniture, as the bristled floorhead agitates carpet fibers thoroughly enough to clear nearly every strand of pet hair in a single pass, and the Hair Screw Turbo Tool makes it easy to remove hair from furniture. Bare floor pickup is great as well, so you won't need to swap floorheads as you move between rooms. Filtration is near-perfect, trapping fine dander and allergens during cleaning rather than releasing them back into your air. On top of that, the built-in particle sensor and auto mode work together to detect dirtier areas and boost power accordingly. The mainly plastic construction makes this vacuum pretty lightweight overall, though it also doesn't feel especially durable given its high price.

There are some downsides, though. Every cordless vacuum on this list is bagless, but the V15's small dirt compartment means you'll be emptying it often if your pets shed heavily, and each time you do, a cloud of dust escapes, so it's best if you can empty it outdoors. Battery life is also short if you rely heavily on the higher-power modes for dealing with embedded hair, lasting just eight minutes, so you'll have to work very quickly. Things are better if you use the low-power Eco mode, which is still enough for tackling pet hair on hard floors; in that configuration, it can run for upwards of 70 minutes, which is enough for tackling apartments and small homes.

  2. Best Upper Mid-Range Cordless Vacuum For Pet Hair

If the plastic construction on the Dyson V15 Detect leaves you wanting something more durable, the Miele Duoflex HX1 is the best cordless stick vacuum for pet hair at an upper mid-range price point that we've tested. Its metal wand and premium-feeling plastic body feel noticeably sturdier, and it matches the V15's exceptional pet hair pickup, lifting both long and short strands in a single pass. This vacuum can run for longer than the Dyson in its maximum High setting, at a little under 15 minutes, which should be enough time to deal with small, stubborn bits of embedded hair. Used in its Low suction mode, it'll run for upwards of an hour, which is suitable for dealing with light messes around your apartment or home. Particle filtration is outstanding, so it's a smart choice if anyone in your home suffers from allergies. It's also one of the most maneuverable cordless vacuums we've tested, cleaning under low furniture easily. The Total Care variant comes with an extensive accessory kit, including an Electro Compact brush and upholstery nozzle for tackling pet hair on furniture.

The trade-off is weaker overall debris pickup performance. Bare floor and carpet pickup both trail the V15, with fine debris like sand getting left behind in carpet fibers and larger debris requiring multiple passes on hard floors. Suction is also notably weak, which limits its effectiveness in cracks and crevices. The dirt compartment is smaller than any Dyson on this list, so you'll need to empty it frequently if your pets shed a lot. On the bright side, emptying the dirt compartment is a cleaner process than it is with the Dysons.

  3. Best Mid-Range Cordless Vacuum For Pet Hair

If you're okay with a smaller selection of tools for dealing with pet hair in exchange for a lower price tag, the Shark PowerPro Flex Reveal Plus is a good option. Compared to a premium model like the Miele Duoflex HX1, this unit doesn't feel as solidly built, with a predominantly plastic chassis that creaks slightly while in use. That said, it's on equal footing when it comes to dealing with pet hair, with exceptional pickup even on hard-to-clean surfaces like low-pile carpeting. Its multi-surface powerhead features an integrated light to help you see finer hair and small debris, along with a brushroll with integrated fins to help minimize hair tangles within the mechanism. That said, longer strands can still get wrapped around the roller brush. Unlike the Miele, the Shark doesn't come with a turbo brush; instead, it's bundled with a straight-suction upholstery tool. That attachment is decently effective in clearing away hair, but finer strands tend to get caught around its edges, instead of being sucked up.

This vacuum offers far more debris capacity than the pricier options on this list, with a dustbin that exceeds 0.6 L in volume; in real-world terms, it offers more than twice the debris capacity of the Miele. Battery performance is another high point; it can run for nearly an hour in its low-power mode or run continuously in its high-suction mode for a little under 20 minutes, which is handy for stubborn messes. Better yet, it charges roughly 25% faster than the Miele. The Shark's HEPA-rated filtration system also delivers fantastic performance when it comes to locking in fine particles like pet dander. Unfortunately, opening the dustbin door does produce a larger cloud of fine dust and allergens than doing so with the Miele.

  4. Best Budget Cordless Vacuum For Pet Hair

The Shark Cordless Pet IX141 is the best stick vacuum for pet hair if you're on a budget, though with an important caveat. Compared to pricier options like the Shark PowerPro Flex Reveal Plus that feature HEPA-rated filtration systems, the IX141's particle filtration performance is awful, with fine allergens like pet dander being liable to blow unimpeded through the exhaust. If anyone in your home has allergies or sensitivities to pet dander, this vacuum isn't a strong choice. If that isn't an issue, this vacuum matches the pet hair pickup performance of pricier models like the Dyson V15 Detect or Miele Duoflex HX1 at a fraction of the cost, and the upholstery tool does a great job clearing hair from furniture. It's also one of the quieter cordless vacuums we've tested, so you won't startle pets while cleaning.

Beyond its poor filtration performance, this vacuum's other main weakness is carpet debris pickup, which is only just adequate. You'll need to make several passes to clear away finer debris embedded in carpet fibers and along walls. The brushroll isn't removable either, so pet hair wraps around it tightly and isn't easy to remove. Battery life tops out at under 40 minutes, which can be limiting when cleaning larger spaces, though a shorter runtime is expected for a cordless vacuum in this price bracket. The battery is also built into the vacuum, leaving you unable to swap out the pack if its performance degrades.

  5. Best Cheap Cordless Vacuum For Pet Hair

The best cheap cordless stick vacuum for pet hair that we've tested is the Wyze Cordless Vacuum S. While it's the most affordable vacuum on this list, it has one notable advantage over the more expensive Shark Cordless Pet IX141: its HEPA filter actually does a good job trapping fine particles and pet dander during cleaning rather than blowing them back into the air. It's also impressively lightweight, making it a cinch to maneuver. It provides similar overall runtime to the Shark, with under 15 minutes of runtime in its highest suction mode and a little over 40 minutes in its low-suction mode; expect somewhere in the region of 25 to 30 minutes in mixed usage. That isn't a lot, but at the very least, unlike the Shark, the Wyze's battery is removable, so you can buy a spare and swap it in if you run out of charge mid-clean.

Pet hair performance is where the savings show, though. It does a decent job on carpets, but fine hairs get left embedded in the fibers, making it a step down from the other picks on our list. Furniture cleanup is awkward, since there's no upholstery tool; you're left using the narrow crevice tool, which takes numerous passes to cover a sofa cushion. Not to mention, bare floor performance is disappointing. If you need a cordless vacuum specifically for pet hair and your budget is extremely limited, the HEPA filtration makes it a healthier choice than the Shark, but you'll have to work harder to get comparable results on every surface.

Notable Mentions

  • Dyson V16 Piston Animal Submarine:

The Dyson V16 Piston Animal Submarine has a more powerful motor than the Dyson V15 Detect, but it doesn't actually translate to better cleaning performance, and its conical roll floorhead leaves a strip of hair behind.

  • Samsung Bespoke AI Jet Ultra:

The Samsung Bespoke AI Jet Ultra is a good alternative to the Dyson V15 Detect. It's not as effective at picking up pet hair, but it still does an impressive job. Additionally, it comes with a docking station that automatically empties the dustbin, which is a huge plus if you have allergies. Unfortunately, it's more expensive than the V15, and its floorhead struggles more with debris pickup.

  • Dyson V8:

The Dyson V8 is a mid-range cordless stick vacuum that provides similar pickup performance to the Shark PowerPro Flex Reveal Plus, along with a wider array of available attachments. That said, its battery life is far shorter, it has a smaller dustbin, and crucially, it's become harder to find from most retailers.

What To Consider When Choosing A Cordless Vacuum For Pet Hair

There are a couple of main factors you should consider before purchasing a cordless vacuum to deal with pet hair. Based on our own lab testing, here are some of the most important considerations to keep in mind while shopping:

Pet Hair Pickup Performance

This is the first thing you should consider when it comes time to buy a vacuum to deal with pet hair. When looking over the results of the Pet Hair Pickup test in our own reviews, you can keep the following in mind when looking at scores:

  • 7.5–8.0: The vacuum has cleared away the majority of pet hair within a single back-and-forth pass, though finer strands remain visible, and a second pass is needed to clear away everything
  • 8.0–9.0: Barely any visible hairs remain after a single back-and-forth sweep, with any remaining hairs being quite hard to see.
  • 9.0–9.5: Effectively, no pet hair remains after a single back-and-forth sweep.

Floorhead/Brushroll

The overwhelming majority of cordless stick vacuums on the market today are equipped with motorized powerheads. With that in mind, you should consider the floor types in your home before making a decision, as floorheads have different types of roller brushes that are suited for different floor types.

  • Bristled brushroll: Has stiff bristles to lift away pet hair and fine debris on carpet, but can fling larger debris around on hard surfaces, and can generate micro-scratches on delicate surfaces.
  • Soft roller: Better-suited for dealing with debris on bare floors, but doesn't do much to lift away debris from carpet fibers.
  • Dual roller: Combines both soft and stiff bristles on a single floorhead, theoretically allowing for better debris pickup across multiple floor types without having to swap attachments. That said, they aren't found on many vacuums.
  • Removable brushrolls: Make the process of clearing away tangled hair and stuck-on debris considerably easier.
    • Several vacuums on the market also feature self-cleaning systems, which typically consist of vanes or fins that press up against the roller to trap pet hair before it can completely jam the roller's rotation.

Filtration

If you or someone else in your household has serious pet allergies, you'll want to pay close attention to our Particle Filtration and Air Quality During Emptying tests. Generally speaking, cordless models, which typically have a bagless design, tend to do rather poorly in the second test, as emptying a bagless dustbin can release a cloud of dust and pet dander.

That isn't to say that all bagless models perform poorly in terms of particle filtration. High-end cordless models tend to feature sophisticated filtration systems that are effective in locking in fine particles. Some manufacturers are experimenting with self-empty docking stations, in which debris is sucked from the dustbin into an external dirt compartment or dirtbag, without making a mess.

Additional Attachments

A broad attachment suite can also make it easier to deal with pet hair on a wide variety of other surfaces.

  • Turbo brush tools are especially useful for dealing with pet hair on fabric surfaces, like armchairs or even automotive upholstery.
    • Upholstery nozzles are also good for the same sort of situations; they're less bulky than turbo brush tools, but also provide less surface agitation.
    • Motorized mini brushes can provide an even higher degree of surface agitation to lift away pet hair, but they're not typically found across all brands and tend to be bulkier than air-driven turbo brushes.
  • Crevice tools can be used to clear away pet hair in hard-to-reach areas, like in between couch cushions or in tight nooks between furniture.
