Good to know (a friend to me want to buy this TV)! When can we expect the Q70R review?
I will use this opportunity to ask about ABL. It seems that it is considered a problem (or at least not a desirable feature). However, when I watch content in a dark room, sometimes I wish the ABL would work harder.
For example, in some documentaries about space/earth, there are times where a very dark scene (space with a few stars) is followed by a very bright scene (close up of the narrator with a full white background). In these cases, I find the bright scenes a bit too bright and my eyes take a bit to adjust.
Is this normal? Are most people ok with such sudden changes in brightness?
For the record, I have experience this in a B8 and C7, with SDR content.

Couldn’t you just lower the contrast setting to solve this issue?

Yes, this is normal. Lowering the contrast to ‘80’, and setting Peak Brightness to ‘Off’ essentially disables ABL on the C9, but the peak brightness is a lot lower.
How dim can the screen get without turning a pixel completely off? Ie how much of a jump is there between “infinite black” and the deepest possible gray?
When could the review of Sony a9g be expected at its earliest
Wednesday or Thursday.
Did you guys turn off the new ambient light feature?? And it’s really weird my c9 isnt dimming with different content it’s doing normal abl when static content is on or when it’s a full white scene but it isnt dimming on different content its actually really bright for an oled and its steady I havent noticed any fluctuation I’ve talked to a few others and they didnt notice anything either also Vincent talked to him he didnt notice anything only when a static logo was on it dimmed over time and he said that was barely noticable no other reviews have seen it either do you think it coukd be your set?? And did you turn the new ambient light feature off because mine is amazingly bright for an oled and very impactful on hdr its outstanding

There is no actual gap between “infinite black” and the deepest possible gray. I was able to measure below-0.05 nits values that weren’t “infinite blacks” on a 5% gray slide by changing the brightness of the screen.

Yes, we turned off the ambient light feature for our testing.
All OLEDs vary in brightness with different content. The Peak Brightness setting on the C9 limits how much this happens, and with it ‘off’, there is almost no variation in brightness, but the peak brightness of the display is significantly lower.

Awesome thank you so much for the reply I completely understand the way you just put it I thought you just meant like it was not normal when I know all oeld TVs have these issues but the c9 is significantly brighter then literally all other oled TVs so I just didnt understand what you meant but thank you again you guys are truely the best t what you do this is why we all come to you

Thank you! I find it’s super noticeable on my Samsung S8+ screen but sounds like it’s not an issue on LG’s tv panels
Could you please say if I will notice this ABL issues (I mean significant brightness drop) in real content? For example, I like to watch films and videos about skiing (a good example is “All.I.Can”). Will I notice brightness drop in a transitions from some “grey” scenes (where we have a lot of trees and shadows) to a full of white snow scenes? I did read your suggestions about Peak Brightness and Contrast settings, but I’m interested if I will notice this ABL issues without doing any “magic” with settings. (because I don’t want to loose HDR perfomance)
Also please say if I’ll get the same brightness drop issues while gaming (for example switching to the scene where we have a huge part of bright sky or massive explosion for the almost 100% of the screen). If you want to understand what I’m tallking about please look on this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=67VTe_mfnfA#t=5m20s What I didn’t like here: it’s not even the fact of dimming, but fact that it’s not being done immediatly. On this video at 5:20 we can see that TV doesn’t show dimmed white screen immediately (in this case we wouldn’t notice the fact of dimming so hard), but instead it shows a full-bright white screen for a moment, and only a bit later dimms it, what is very noticable. Also it is significant brightness drops when we have a huge area of bright sky.
Is this behavior typical for a real content described by me? And is this behaviour the same for different OLED TVs? For example, which should be better for a real scenes - LG OLED C8 or C9 (the price is about the same at the moment in my region)?

I was super nervous about ABL too. But in the end it couldn’t be more dispensable. I don’t see it in any content i watch or play. You should absolutely go for the C9. You will love it.

May I ask if you watched a content mentioned by me (a lot of bright snow under the sun, massive full-screen explosions, hockey or football, bright sky) and if you noticed some issues with brightness drop in such scenarios?
Hi I’m wondering if anyone can clarify something, when I enable Game picture mode the Peak Brightness option becomes grayed out and I just want to know if it is forced to Off, Low, Medium or High?
Also, if Peak Brightness is locked on High or Medium or Low, would lowering the OLED Light, and or Contrast to around 50 still stop ABL from kicking in? I play FPS games in pitch black room 3 feet from TV and honestly would be happier if I could maintain screen brightness at about 200 cd/m² all the time to keep gamma consistent. Is that even possible with Peak Brightness Setting Locked on High, Medium or Low instead of Off? Thank you for help.
