Testing NVidia HDMI 2.1 VRR

Nvidia’s newest drivers v441.12 supposedly support variable refresh rate via HDMI. They did a joint press release with LG, focusing on LG’s OLED TVs supporting VRR from NVidia GPUs.

I tried this today on the Samsung Q90R, but it didn’t work.

  1. Connect the PC to HDMI port 4.
  2. Update to newest drivers. (I’m using an RTX 2080 TI)
  3. Ensure TV has the newest software (v1315)
  4. On the TV, enable Input Signal Plus.
  5. On the TV, enable game mode, turn FreeSync on.
  6. On the GPU, set the resolution to 4k and refresh to 60hz. (VRR for the Q90R @ 4K should only go up to 60hz)
  7. On the GPU, enable G-Sync.
  8. Run NVidia’s pendulum demo.

It did NOT work.

I also tried 1440p resolution, but that also did not work.

Has anyone had any success getting NVidia VRR to work over HDMI with the Q90R? (Or any other TV?)
