One difference is that the 2021 version will get the Dolby Vision 4K120 update, but the 2020 version will not.

I have Nano85 and can use VRR with an RTX card and Freesync with an AMD card with the newest firmware update (only tested RTX). I do not have nano90, but I assume it is the same.

Thanks for pointing this out. In 2019 the TVs at the time didn’t support FreeSync (this was added later through firmware). The Xbox One S supports both HDMI Forum VRR and FreeSync, and we were able to confirm no FreeSync support with an AMD graphics card. This means that Variable Refresh Rate support on the Xbox One S was only possible via HDMI Forum Variable Refresh Rate. We confirmed VRR support on the Xbox at this time, which is why they are listed to support HDMI Forum Variable Refresh Rate. With 2020 models though, out of the box FreeSync works. This means that our old testing methodology was inconclusive (as soon as FreeSync is supported we don’t know if the Xbox is using FreeSync or HDMI Forum VRR). We’ll look into updating our test method to fix this issue. Thanks again!

Thank you for the great response. I am pointing this out for RU9000, but the points are still valid for all 2018/2019 and 2020 Samsung TVs. Please consider putting “Unknown” for HDMI Forum VRR support on those TVs as well.

EDIT: Just checked 2020 Samsung TVs. Unknown is already there! TY! Please consider putting a note on flawed HDMI Forum VRR testing methodology on 2018/2019 Samsung TVs that may result in “Unknown” HDMI Forum VRR support.

No, DTS support was removed in 2019.

Actually, it is possible to test for this now. With the recent addition of HDMI Forum VRR support to NVIDIA 16- and 20- series cards, if a display can use VRR over HDMI connected to our RTX 2070 Super, we are able to confirm that it supports HDMI Forum VRR. This is a recent addition though.

Will you revise many of the Samsung reviews when you get a chance? They indicate HDMI Forum VRR compatibility. With consideration of this recent test methodology of using 16- and 20- series cards, I’m uncertain if this was actually confirmed, especially in 2019 Samsung TVs.

Personally, I cannot get an RTX 2060 to successfully work on an RU8000 for HDMI Forum VRR. An AMD card (5700 XT) does work though for Freesync.

Have you tried the latest firmware from July 2020? The changelog mentions ghosting.

Your understanding is correct. If a TV supports both, unfortunately, there’s no way to tell which one is being used. The only way we can check which one a TV supports is to test on a PC with an AMD graphics card and the Xbox One. If it works only on the Xbox, it only supports HDMI Forum VRR. There’s also no way to force a display to use one over the other, but we don’t think it matters much.

Is it accurate to mark yes for HDMI Forum VRR support in the reviews when a display supports both Freesync and HDMI forum VRR? As you’ve already mentioned, it is not possible to tell which is being used.

It has been many months now and I have no issues using Freesync on the C9. I’m very happy that it works.

Do you mind posting or linking a step by step guide to do this?

Only Nvidia 16xx and 20xx (i.e. Turing) is currently allowed by the driver to use Gsync compatible settings over HDMI. Displayport VRR works with 10xx series (Pascal) though.
