Impact of local dimming settings on the brightness of a FALD TV on high spatial frequency content

Here’s some data I took with a calibration probe (Calibrite Display Plus HL) on a TCL C745 TV (Q650G: https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/tcl/q7-q750g-qled/settings) using test patterns from 1/16% to 64%. White test pattern on black background and 4x4 pixel checkerboard pattern on black background. Ideally, 1024x1024 pixel checkerboard patterns (APL 12.6%) with variable tile sizes of 1x1, 2x2, 4x4, 8x8, …, 1024x1024 pixels on a black background.

We can see that setting Local Dimming (LD) to High reduces brightness on detailed content. We’re at 127 cd/m² with LD deactivated vs. 16 cd/m² with LD set to High, although very often in tests, the High setting is recommended for SDR. In SDR, I don’t think this is necessarily a good idea, although the black level is deeper.
Note: The average brightness with the checkerboard is not exactly 50% because the proportion of white and black is probably not exactly 50%. There may be a few more white pixels in proportion, or vice versa (the probe has not been moved for different tests of the same type of test pattern).
