Thank you for your suggestion. We have tested the WH-1000XM3 before and after the update 4.1.1 update. From our measurements, it doesn’t seem like there is a noticeable difference in the noise canceling efficiency, but you can check out the results for your self by following this link. However, maybe we got lucky with our unit since the consensus online seems pretty mixed on this issue. In any case, we will update the XM3 review with a screenshot of this retest.

I am coming directly from the XM2 and can confirm the XM3 that I bought new with 4.1.1 installed are sub par in comparison to the previous model. Tested on a Southwest Airlines flight sitting in Row 3. I could clearly hear the jet engine hiss, people talking, and air conditioning wind noise in my XM3s. XM2s are dead silent. Dissapointing.

Hi Marc, are you guys planning to test out ANC performance while users are taking a call? I believe due to the limited mics on XM3, the sound as well as ANC quality deteriorates when it locks on to Hands-Free mode compared to Stereo Mode on PC. This will provide NCH 700 an even larger edge in an office setting where calls are frequently made.

Thank you for your suggestion. We do not currently test for ANC performance on calls, but from the Noise Handling and Recording test quality alone the NCH700 are doing much better than the XM3. We may look into it when we have a bit more time and post our findings in this discussion thread, but for now, the Microphone test already shows that the NCH700 are the better option for making calls.

Any chance of a re-test with firmware version 4.5.2?

And testing multiple units from different selling batches? As user “Akjackson009” mentioned above, ANC is comparably worse on my unit. I could barely hear people talking before where as now I clearly hear the traffic coming from an open window or white noise example videos on youtube, let alone something else. It’s really frustrating that I don’t have an option to downgrade at least.

We have limited resources, so we currently only test one unit, unless the manufacturer tells us that our results aren’t representative, as per our out of spec policy. We don’t currently plan on retesting them on 4.5.2, but if there’s enough interest, we’ll look into it.

Mine XM3 is 4.2.2. My first impression on my XM3 is that my sister’s XM2 is noticeably better on sound quality and ANC performance than the XM3.

Most XM3 ANC downgrade information complaint the vocal ANC performance. Since the voice signal is irregular and with pulses for each word. So I think it’s more likely that the difference was based on transient signal. So it may hard to measured with continuous signal or noise.

Strangely, I also have feeling my ANC got worse over some time (month or two). Hard to say if it was a software update, but at the beginning it blew my mind how silent it was and now I am still hearing vacuum cleaner, neighbors fixing something or youtube’s “noise videos” (more quiet, but hearable). And that very quiet noise from the right ear, when cable is connected and music is off… annoying
