The Beautyrest Silver BRS900 is a mid-range innerspring mattress. Its 'Dual Cool' cover material and corrugated foam comfort layer are advertised for cooling, while its pocket spring support layer helps with motion isolation versus other types of springs. This mattress also has additional memory foam in the lumbar area.

Our Verdict

6.7
Side Sleeping

The Beautyrest Silver BRS900 is best-suited for heavier side sleepers. It offers good body conformity and adequate support for people in that weight category, so your shoulder will sink into it enough to relieve pressure, but your hips will stay reasonably supported. It's not a bad option for average people, with decent body conformity, but you might prefer a plusher mattress to avoid putting pressure on your arms and shoulders. Finally, as you'd expect from a 'Medium-Firm' mattress, it's not ideal for lighter side sleepers. It offers poor body conformity for lighter people, so you won't compress it enough for comfortable side sleeping.

Pros
  • Decent body conformity for average people.

  • Great body conformity for heavier people.

  • Highly contouring feel helps with pressure relief.

Cons
  • Poor body conformity for lighter people.

6.8
Back Sleeping

The Beautyrest Silver BRS900 is best suited for lighter back sleepers, but is also an okay option for people in other weight categories. It offers decent support for lighter people, which helps ensure your hips don't sink in overly far. While its pressure relief performance isn't great for lighter people, as you won't sink much into its upper layers, its highly contouring feel helps with pressure relief. It's also fairly supportive for people in the average and heavier weight categories, so while it's not a bad option for back sleeping, it won't keep your spine completely aligned when you're sleeping on your back.

Pros
  • Adequate support for average and heavier people.

  • Highly contouring feel helps with pressure relief.

Cons
  • Average and heavier people may need more support.

6.8
Stomach Sleeping

The Beautyrest Silver BRS900 is best-suited for lighter side sleepers. It offers satisfactory support for people in that weight category, so it does a decent job of keeping your spine aligned when sleeping on your stomach. That said, you may prefer an even more supportive mattress for stomach sleeping, where support is especially important to keep your back from arching. Similarly, while it's fairly supportive for average and heavier individuals, its performance isn't sufficient for stomach sleeping.

Pros
  • Adequate support for average and heavier people.

Cons
  • Average and heavier people may need more support.

2.8
Longevity

The Beautyrest Silver isn't a durable mattress. None of the foam layers is dense enough to meet the standard for good quality, so they'll degrade faster than higher-quality foams. As a result, you can expect the mattress to sag and lose its shape more quickly than models made with better-quality foam.

Pros
None
Cons
  • Uses only low-quality foam.

6.7
Pressure Relief

The Beautyrest Silver BRS900 offers different levels of pressure relief depending on your weight. This 'Medium-Firm' mattress offers great body conformity for individuals in the heavier weight category, who will compress it sufficiently to relieve pressure when sleeping on their side. It offers decent body conformity for average people, but average side sleepers may want a mattress with better conformity for comfortable side sleeping. Its performance is worse for lighter people, so it's not a good choice for side sleeping, where pressure relief is especially important. The sleeping surface is highly contouring, creating a hugging feel that helps with pressure relief. However, you'll hardly sink into its upper layers, so it's not a very enveloping mattress.

Pros
  • Decent body conformity for average people.

  • Great body conformity for heavier people.

  • Highly contouring feel helps with pressure relief.

Cons
  • Poor body conformity for lighter people.

6.8
Support

The Beautyrest Silver BRS900 isn't extremely supportive for anyone, but it offers okay support for most people. It's decently supportive for lighter people, so it'll keep your spine aligned well enough for back and side sleeping. It offers adequate support for average people, and slightly worse support for people in the heavier weight category. While it's supportive enough for side sleeping, it's not ideal for back or stomach sleeping, where you may require more support to maintain spine alignment and sleep comfortably.

Pros
  • Adequate support for average and heavier people.

Cons
  • Average and heavier people may need more support.

7.7
Cooling

The Beautyrest Silver offers very good cooling. It should keep you cool and comfortable throughout the night if you don't typically experience overheating while sleeping. However, for hot sleepers, it may not be sufficiently cooling, especially if you're often bothered by heat during the first hour or so in bed, when trying to fall asleep.

Pros
  • Good cooling.

Cons
None
7.4
Motion Dissipation

The Beautyrest Silver offers decent motion dissipation. As a spring mattress, it doesn't isolate movement as well as all-foam mattresses, but it features pocket coils, which transfer less movement compared to continuous coils. When your partner rolls over, you'll feel some motion in the lumbar and head areas. However, it dissipates quickly, so you won't wake up with every little movement.

Pros
  • Motion dissipates quickly, so you only feel motion briefly.

Cons
  • You'll feel most movements, so it's not ideal for sleeping with a partner.

9.5
Responsiveness

The Beautyrest Silver is very responsive. This mattress is primarily composed of polyfoam and pocket coils, and it recovers its original shape almost instantly after being compressed. You won't feel stuck in place, which is especially important if you frequently change positions while sleeping.

Pros
  • Fantastic responsiveness, so you can easily change sleeping positions.

    Differences Between Sizes And Variants

The Beautyrest Silver is available in various sizes and firmness ratings, depending on the retailer. It's available in Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, and California King sizes, as well as Medium (12 inches), Extra Firm (12 inches), and Plush (15 inches). We tested the Queen-sized 'Medium' variant (Beautyrest 12-inch Silver BRS900 Medium Firm Mattress). Here's a picture of our unit's label.

If you have the Beautyrest Silver or another variant, let us know in the comments.

    Popular Mattress Comparisons

The Beautyrest Silver is a hybrid mattress with fantastic edge support, making it a particularly good option for individuals with mobility issues or those who often sleep close to the edge of the bed. While it's fairly good at cooling sleepers throughout the night, hot sleepers will prefer options like the Purple Mattress, since it offers much better cooling performance, especially while falling asleep. Just know that this mattress has a more contouring feel.

    Sealy Posturepedic Plus Mount Auburn

The Beautyrest Silver BRS900 and the Sealy Posturepedic Plus Mount Auburn have different strengths. They're both medium-firm, but the Beautyrest contours around you more, while you'll sink more deeply into the Sealy's upper layers. The Beautyrest is bouncier and more responsive, so it's much easier to move around on. The Sealy has a slower-moving feel, but a better motion dissipation performance, so you might prefer it for sleeping with a partner.

    Beautyrest Mattress

The Beautyrest Mattress is better than the Beautyrest Silver BRS900. Both have a medium-firm feel, but the Beautyrest Mattress is more supportive for all weight categories and offers better body conformity for heavier people. This makes it a stronger option for average/heavier back sleepers and heavier side sleepers. It also offers better motion isolation, so light sleepers may prefer it. The Silver has a more responsive feel, which you may prefer if you move around a lot in your sleep.

Lifting the Covers On Mattress Performance
Lifting the Covers On Mattress Performance

We've recently started testing mattresses. We use objective data and repeatable testing for key characteristics like firmness, cooling, and motion isolation, to ensure each mattress gets the same treatment. Since we buy all of our mattresses, we can tear them down layer by layer and isolate the mechanical properties of every component: quilted tops, foams, coils, and any special materials. Our approach gives us unprecedented insight into how each product design decision contributes to a mattress's overall performance and feel, and allows us to tailor our results to different body types and sleeping positions.

This 'Medium-Firm' mattress performs best for heavier side sleepers and lighter back and stomach sleepers. It's also suitable for side sleepers in the average weight category, although you may want a mattress with better pressure relief. Similarly, while average and heavier back sleepers would ideally want a more supportive mattress, it's an okay option. However, it's really not well-suited for lighter side sleepers or average and heavier stomach sleepers.

The body conformity performance of this mattress varies significantly depending on your weight. It performs best for people in the heavier weight category, as it compresses easily enough to relieve pressure, especially when sleeping on your side. It offers decent conformity for average people, but you may prefer a plusher mattress for side sleeping. It's not conforming enough to effectively relieve pressure for lighter people, so it's not a good option for lighter side sleepers.

This mattress doesn't offer great support regardless of your weight, but it offers at least adequate support for most people. It performs best for lighter individuals, who will receive decent support, making it suitable for side and back sleeping, but less ideal for stomach sleeping, where support is especially crucial to prevent your back from arching. It offers an adequate performance for average people and a similar but slightly worse performance for heavier people, so the heavier parts of your body, like your hips, will sink in a little further than is ideal for back or stomach sleeping. However, this Medium-Firm mattress still offers better support for people in that weight category than some plusher mattresses, like The WinkBeds The WinkBed.

This mattress doesn't do a good job of isolating movement. You'll feel both big and small movements, such as when your partner rolls over or shifts in place, throughout your head, feet, and lumbar areas. If you're a light sleeper, you'll likely wake up throughout the night as a result. On the plus side, motion dissipates quickly, so you won't feel like the mattress wobbles around for a long time whenever someone moves.

The Beautyrest Silver has fantastic edge support. The edges of the bed are reinforced with firm foam and don't compress much when you sit or lie on the edge. This makes it easier to get in and out of bed, ensuring you don't feel like you're about to slide off when sleeping on the edge.

The Beautyrest BRS900 has a good cooling performance. It won't make you feel warmer if you don't usually sleep hot. However, hot sleepers may want a mattress with better cooling. It's not particularly effective at dissipating heat during the first hour or so, so it's most likely to create a problem if you often feel overheated as you fall asleep.

The upper comfort layer is composed of quilted fiber and polyfoam, allowing you to easily sink into it and feel the next layer, which is slightly firmer polyfoam. There's also a strip of memory foam across the mattress's lumbar area. This strip of foam is noticeable when lying on the mattress; it doesn't make the mattress firmer or softer, but simply feels like there's more material in that area. This might help fill in gaps between your lower back and the mattress when sleeping on your back.

This mattress has three inches of foam above its pocket coil layer. The upper quilted layer is really soft and just 2" thick, so you'll probably compress it completely and interact with the somewhat firmer polyfoam layer below. There's also a 0.5" strip of memory foam in the lumbar area. As this is where most of your weight is likely concentrated, it adds some extra cushioning under your lower back while also helping you avoid feeling the springs too much if you compress the upper layers.

The support layer is made of pocket coils, which are individually encased in fabric, offering better contouring and motion isolation compared to other types of springs. The 15-gauge springs are on the softer side, but since the layer is very dense, it feels firmer overall. The spring layer gives the mattress its firmness, as the foam layers above are all quite soft, and helps provide support for the heavier parts of your body.

The foam used in the quilted comfort layer and upper comfort foam has a good amount of bounce. This helps give the mattress a bouncy feel, allowing you to move around easily during sleep. That said, the lower comfort foam isn't very resilient, which is expected for memory foam. This adds a little bit of plushness in that area, but doesn't affect the overall feel of the mattress much, since it's a 0.5" layer that's only in the lumbar area.

The springs have a lot of bounce, so they push back when pressure is applied, which, along with the fairly bouncy foam layers, helps give the mattress its noticeable bounciness. This makes it feel easy to move around on the mattress.
