If you like a mattress that feels like a hug, you might consider a memory foam mattress. Memory foam is usually soft and highly contouring, which helps with pressure relief. Since it's typically slow-moving, memory foam mattresses can offer good motion isolation, which is ideal if you sleep light or with a partner who tosses and turns. However, mattresses with a memory foam upper layer can respond slowly, making some sleepers feel unpleasantly stuck rather than comfortably cuddled.
We've tested over 50 mattresses, and below you'll find our recommendations for the best mattresses with memory foam. Our recommendations include all-foam as well as hybrid models, but all have memory foam comfort layers.
If you want a look at other types of mattresses, check out our picks for the best hybrid mattresses, the best firm mattresses, and the best mattresses overall.
We've recently started testing mattresses. We purchase each unit independently from major retailers, just like you, to keep our reviews free of manufacturer influence. Each mattress undergoes the same tests to measure objective data on characteristics like firmness, cooling, and motion isolation, so you can easily compare results. Since we buy all our mattresses, we can tear them down layer by layer and isolate the mechanical properties of every component: quilted tops, foams, coils, and any special materials.

Best Memory Foam Mattress
Firmness LevelMedium (47 Pa/mm)Side SleepingBack SleepingStomach SleepingResponsivenessMotion DissipationCoolingSee all our test resultsLongevityThe best memory foam mattress we've tested is the Casper Snow. This mattress's soft memory foam comfort layers and low responsiveness give it a soft, hugging feel. It has Medium firmness overall and offers a versatile performance, with enough support and pressure relief for most side sleepers. Its hybrid design, with a support layer of pocket coils, gives it its moderate bounciness, which helps make it a little easier to move around in your sleep despite its slow-moving memory foam layers.
It offers excellent cooling. It doesn't feel warm during the first hour of sleep, and it dissipates heat efficiently all night, making it an amazing option if you sleep hot and cooling is a priority. Its great motion isolation means your partner's movements aren't as likely to wake you up. Unfortunately, edge support is a weak point. The sides compress easily when you sit or sleep on the side of the mattress. This reduces the comfortable sleeping surface and makes getting in and out of bed more difficult, especially for people with mobility issues. It's also not very durable. The comfort layers are made of lower-density foam, making it more prone to forming permanent indentations sooner.

Best Upper Mid-Range Memory Foam Mattress
Firmness LevelMedium (48 Pa/mm)Side SleepingBack SleepingStomach SleepingResponsivenessMotion DissipationCoolingSee all our test resultsLongevityIf you're looking for a less expensive memory foam mattress, consider the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Adapt. This all-foam mattress's design includes 3 inches of plush, slow-moving memory foam, giving it a hugging, contouring feel, not unlike the Casper Snow. However, while it has the same Medium firmness overall, you won't sink very deeply into it, so it's not quite as enveloping. It's a good option for lighter back and stomach sleepers as well as average-weight and heavier side sleepers.
This mattress stands out for its fantastic motion dissipation. You'll only feel big movements, and only briefly, making it a great option for sleeping with a partner. However, it's not very bouncy at all, and while that may improve its motion-dissipation performance, its near-lack of bounce also makes moving around in your sleep more difficult, especially when combined with the low-resilience memory foam layers. Otherwise, it performs quite well overall, with good cooling and adequate edge support. It's moderately durable, with high-quality memory foam comfort layers, but its lower-density support foam may wear sooner.

Best Mid-Range Memory Foam Mattress
Firmness LevelMedium-Plush (39 Pa/mm)Side SleepingBack SleepingStomach SleepingResponsivenessMotion DissipationCoolingSee all our test resultsLongevityIf you want a memory foam mattress for less, consider the Nolah Evolution. This mid-range hybrid mattress has a softer, Medium-Plush feel that makes it very well-suited for average-weight side sleepers. While it's not as supportive overall as the Tempur-Pedic Tempur-ADAPT, it's also a good option for lighter back and stomach sleepers. The mattress's comfort layers of gel-infused memory foam help make it highly contouring. You'll sink quite deeply into it overall, and it's not very responsive, so it has an enveloping, hugging feel. That said, its memory foam layers aren't as slow-moving as the previous pick's, and because of its hybrid design, it's much bouncier, which might be a plus if you're worried about feeling stuck in place.
Its impressive motion isolation means you won't feel most movements your partner makes, although motion dissipates somewhat slowly, making bigger movements more likely to wake you. Its edges provide a solid surface for getting in and out of bed. Unfortunately, it's not particularly durable, with a mix of good and low-quality foams. It's also not a good option for hot sleepers. Actually, its mediocre cooling performance means it might make you feel warmer even if you don't usually sleep hot, so it's not a good option if heat is a concern at all.

Best Budget Memory Foam Mattress
Firmness LevelMedium-Plush (39 Pa/mm)Side SleepingBack SleepingStomach SleepingResponsivenessMotion DissipationCoolingSee all our test resultsLongevityIf you're looking for a budget-friendly memory foam mattress, consider the Silk & Snow Mattress. This all-foam mattress's comfort layer is made of gel-infused memory foam that has some slightly unusual characteristics: it's quite resilient for memory foam, and responds quickly when you move. It's also not very contouring. You'll sink quite far into the memory foam layer, but it doesn't have a hugging feel like the previous picks. Its soft comfort layer and solid support make it well-suited for people in the lighter weight category, especially side sleepers. It's not a bad choice for average and heavier side sleepers, as long as you don't mind sinking quite a lot into your mattress.
While it doesn't have a typical memory foam feel, it does offer outstanding motion dissipation, similar to other all-foam models like the Tempur-Pedic Tempur-ADAPT. You'll hardly feel any movements, so it's a great option if you sleep lightly. It's also cooling enough for hot sleepers. All of the foam in the mattress is dense enough to be considered good quality, which should help it resist sagging for longer. However, its edge support is mediocre. If you sleep near the edge of the mattress, you might want a mattress with sturdier sides.

Best Cheap Memory Foam Mattress
Firmness LevelMedium-Firm (56 Pa/mm)Side SleepingBack SleepingStomach SleepingResponsivenessMotion DissipationCoolingSee all our test resultsLongevityThe best cheap memory foam mattress that we've tested is the Nectar Classic Hybrid. This all-foam mattress's upper comfort layer gives it a highly contouring and slightly slow-moving feel. It's Medium-Firm, making it best suited for light and average-weight back and stomach sleepers as well as heavier side sleepers. While it isn't very responsive, its spring layer adds bounciness, which helps make it feel easier to move around in your sleep.
While its motion isolation performance isn't quite as good as the Nectar Premier's, it's still excellent, which helps make movements less likely to wake you. It's also cooling enough to keep most people comfortable and offers decent edge support. However, its memory foam layer is made of low-quality memory foam, which makes it prone to forming permanent indentations sooner than mattresses with higher-quality foams.
Notable Mentions
-
Nectar Classic:
The Nectar Classic is the all-foam version of the Nectar Classic Hybrid, and like that mattress, it's best for average-weight and heavier side sleepers or lighter back/stomach sleepers. It performs quite similarly, but has a more contouring, less responsive feel, so you might prefer it if you want the typical memory foam feel for cheap. However, its cooling and edge support are worse.
