If you like a mattress that feels like a hug, you should consider a memory foam mattress. Memory foam is usually soft and highly contouring, which helps with pressure relief. Since it's typically slow-moving, memory foam mattresses can offer good motion isolation, which is ideal if you sleep lightly or with a partner who tosses and turns. However, mattresses with a memory foam upper layer can respond slowly, making some sleepers feel unpleasantly stuck rather than comfortably cuddled.

We've tested over 50 models, and below you'll find our recommendations for the best mattresses with memory foam. Our recommendations include all-foam as well as hybrid models, but all have memory foam comfort layers. If you want a look at other types of mattresses, check out our picks for the best hybrid mattresses and the best latex mattresses. How We Test Mattresses
How We Test Mattresses

We've recently started testing mattresses. We purchase each unit independently from major retailers, just like you, to keep our reviews free of manufacturer influence. Each mattress undergoes the same tests to measure objective data on characteristics like firmness, cooling, and motion isolation, so you can easily compare results. Since we buy all our mattresses, we can tear them down layer by layer and isolate the mechanical properties of every component: quilted tops, foams, coils, and any special materials.

  1. Best Memory Foam Mattress

The best memory foam mattress we've tested is the Casper Snow. This Medium mattress's soft memory foam comfort layers give it a hugging, slow-moving feel, and it's a great option if you want an enveloping mattress. It offers strong support and pressure relief for people in a range of weight categories, so it's a versatile option that works for combination sleepers or couples with different needs. While its low responsiveness can make some people feel constricted, its support layer of pocket coils gives it its moderate bounciness, which helps avoid the lifeless feeling of some all-foam mattresses and makes it feel a little easier to move around on.

This memory foam mattress also offers excellent cooling. It doesn't feel warm during the first hour of sleep, and it dissipates heat efficiently all night, making it an amazing option if you sleep hot and cooling is a priority. Its great motion isolation means your partner's movements aren't likely to wake you up. However, edge support is a weak point. The sides compress easily when you sit or sleep on the side of the mattress. This reduces the comfortable sleeping surface and makes getting in and out of bed more difficult, especially for people with mobility issues. It's also not very durable. The comfort layers are made of lower-density foam, making it more prone to forming permanent indentations sooner.

  2. Best Upper Mid-Range Memory Foam Mattress

If you're looking for a high-end mattress but would prefer an all-foam construction instead of a hybrid like the Casper Snow, we recommend the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Adapt. This all-foam mattress's design includes 3" of plush memory foam, giving it a hugging, contouring feel, not unlike the Casper. However, while it has the same Medium firmness overall, you won't sink as deeply into it, so it's not quite as enveloping. Still, its particular combination of contouring and support makes it an ideal choice for lighter back and stomach sleepers as well as average-weight and heavier side sleepers.

It stands out for its fantastic motion dissipation. You'll only feel big movements, and only briefly, making it a great option if you sleep lightly and are often disturbed by movement at night. However, it's not very bouncy at all, and while that may improve its motion-dissipation performance, its near-lack of bounce also makes moving around in your sleep more difficult, especially when combined with the sleeping surface's slow-moving feel. Otherwise, it performs quite well overall, with good cooling and adequate edge support. It's moderately durable, with high-quality memory foam comfort layers, but its lower-density support foam may wear sooner.

  3. Best Mid-Range Memory Foam Mattress

We recommend the Nolah Evolution if you're looking for a slightly plusher feeling mattress and want to save a bit of money. This Medium-Plush mattress, mainly available directly from the manufacturer, has highly contouring gel-infused memory foam layers. You'll sink quite deeply into it, which helps create a hugging, enveloping feel. That said, its memory foam layers aren't as slow-moving as the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Adapt's, so you're less likely to feel stuck in place, and because of its hybrid design, it's much bouncier, which might be a plus if you move around a lot in your sleep. While it's not as supportive as the previous pick, its impressive pressure relief makes it well-suited for side sleepers, especially in the average and heavier weight categories.

Its motion isolation isn't as strong as the all-foam Tempur-Pedic's, but it's still great. Motion dissipates somewhat slowly, making bigger movements more likely to wake you, but you won't feel most of the smaller movements. Unfortunately, it's not particularly durable, with a mix of good and low-quality foams. It's also not a good option for hot sleepers. Actually, its mediocre cooling performance means it might make you feel warmer even if you don't usually sleep hot, so it's not a good option if heat is a concern at all.

  4. Best Budget Memory Foam Mattress

If you're looking for a budget-friendly memory foam mattress, consider the Silk & Snow Mattress. This all-foam mattress's comfort layer is made of gel-infused memory foam that has some slightly unusual characteristics: it's quite resilient for memory foam, and responds quickly when you move. It's also not very contouring. You'll sink quite far into the memory foam layer, but it doesn't have a hugging feel like the previous picks. The mattress's soft comfort layer and solid support make it well-suited for people in the lighter weight category, especially side sleepers. It's not a bad choice for average-weight and heavier side sleepers either, as long as you don't mind sinking quite a lot into your mattress.

While it doesn't have a typical memory foam feel, it does offer outstanding motion dissipation, similar to other all-foam models like the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Adapt. You'll hardly feel any movements, so it's a great option if you sleep lightly. It's also cooling enough for hot sleepers. All of the foam in the mattress is dense enough to be considered good quality, which should help it resist sagging for longer. However, its edge support is mediocre. If you sleep near the edge of the mattress, you might want a mattress with sturdier sides.

  5. Best Cheap Memory Foam Mattress

The best cheap memory foam mattress that we've tested is the Nectar Classic Hybrid. This hybrid mattress has a Medium-Firm feel and isn't as enveloping as some of the previous picks, including the Silk & Snow Mattress, but its highly contouring comfort layer helps add some pressure relief. Its low responsiveness helps add to its hugging feel, while a spring support layer adds bounciness, so it feels easy to move around on. It offers solid support for lighter and average-weight back/stomach sleepers, and while heavier back/stomach sleepers may want a more supportive mattress, it's a good option for heavier side sleepers.

This mattress also offers excellent motion isolation, so you can sleep peacefully with a partner. It's cooling enough to keep most people comfortable and offers decent edge support. However, it's not the most durable mattress. The memory foam layer is made of low-quality memory foam, which makes it prone to forming permanent indentations sooner than mattresses with higher-quality foams.

Notable Mentions

  • Nectar Classic:

The Nectar Classic is the all-foam version of the Nectar Classic Hybrid, and like that mattress, it's best for average-weight and heavier side sleepers or lighter back/stomach sleepers. It performs quite similarly, but has a more contouring, less responsive feel, so you might prefer it if you want the typical memory foam feel for cheap. However, its cooling and edge support are worse.

  • Novosbed:

The Novosbed is a mid-range all-foam mattress with a Firm feel. Its memory foam comfort layers are firmer than the Nolah Evolution's and offer much less pressure relief, but the Nolah is much more supportive, making it a better option for most back/stomach sleepers. The Nolah also offers better cooling.
