Sony X80J / Screen Luminance Dimming Issue

Thanks for the calibration settings.

I received an X80J a week ago and have found some odd behaviour regarding the screen’s luminance dimming automatically when a black screen appears for more than a few seconds. I’ve been trying to diagnose if it’s a fault with my particular unit or a common quirk with all X80Js. Here’s a breakdown - any assistance would be most appreciated.

All picture processing settings are switched off. Picture Mode is “Custom”. Contrast is set to “90” and “Brightness” at “Min”. “Black Level” is set at “52” (rather than “50”) - and here’s why:

  • The TV screen’s luminance level automatically dims after approximately three seconds of a completely black picture (such as when a film “fades out”). Any kind of overlayed graphic, such as bringing up the the TV’s menu, will raise the luminance again. Similarly, the luminance level raises again as the black picture “fades in”;

  • As far as I can determine, this behaviour is common to all “Picture Mode” settings (e.g. Vivid, Cinema, Photo, Custom, etc.);

  • The behaviour is related to both the “Black Adjust” and “Advanced Contrast Enhancer” settings (which I set to “Off”). You can detect subtle changes in how the luminance dims when adjusting these. (Both these settings have menu captions indicating that they control the screen luminance in relation to the brightness of the picture.)

  • The luminance dimming occurs even if both “Black Adjust” and “Advanced Contrast Enhancer” are set to “Off”. However, it does not occur if the television’s “Black Level” is set to “52” or above. Setting the “Black Level” to “51” or less results in the screen luminance dimming when detecting a black screen.

So, currently, my workaround is to keep the “Black Level” set at “52”.

I have no idea if this is a fault or just an annoying behavioural feature of the X80J. I don’t want to go to the hassle of exchanging the unit if the replacement is going to do exactly the same thing.

Can anyone shed any light (excuse the pun!) on the issue?
