We don’t currently plan on buying this one unless it wins our suggestion poll. We didn’t buy the 2023 model, either, as it wasn’t very popular.
this isn’t like last year’s QNED85. that model was likely morphed into this year’s QNED90T, and last year’s QNED80 was likely turned into the QNED85T. same could be said for the QNED80T from last year’s QNED75, which sadly wasn’t reviewed.
i’m [and maybe some others] wanting to see if LG is actually wanting to improve their edge-lit IPS panels this year, so this deserves a review.

I just saw the QNED 85 2024 model on display at BB in town and it is a beast with eye popping contrast and colors and vg brightness . Overall excellent balance of virtues , it would be worthwhile to see if it’s better than the previous model . I believe it is . As good as competing models price wise ? Currently on sale at a decent price and worthy to compare .
I don’t think an edge lit TV from LG is worth it in 2024. The local dimming will be very ineffective at adjusting the contrast and brightness of scenes. The peak and sustained brightness will no doubt be disappointing and insufficient. The options for local dimming setting will likely be confusing at best since the “zones” aren’t really present and PQ EOTF and color tracking might be affected. Being Edge lit will also cause vignetting compared to full array. Hisense and TCL TVs of similar prices will be a more satisfactory.

How long does it usually take from purchase to review publish?
For TVs that’s hard to say, as we buy TVs faster than we can test them, so they’ll often be in our lab for a while waiting for us to start testing. A more useful metric would be the time from when we start testing to when it’s published, which is usually around 2 weeks.

Since it seems to be a rebadged QNED80, I’m curious if it at least offers improvements over the previous QNED80s, maybe it absorbed some previous QNED85 features? Though it seems it’s edge-lit, sad it downgraded
Is the QNED87T just a European variant of this model, like the QNED 87 was apparently a variant of the 85?
Hey there. That’s exactly the case here! Like last year, the QNED87T uses a center-mounted stand and has some other cosmetic differences, but it should perform very similarly, if not identically, to the QNED85T. I hope that helps!

Very helpful, thanks. Gonna wait for this review (hopefully it’ll be posted some time before or around Black Friday?) to see whether it is an acceptable compromise for the B4 (ATM with sales there’s around £300 difference).
hi!
Based on the QNED85T review, it seems that RTINGS evaluated the model with local dimming enabled, despite it being an edge-lit model. Can this be interpreted as RTINGS suggesting that enabling edge local dimming could benefit users due to the high contrast performance?
I am on the fence about this tv - it got a decent rating for the money. Thoughts?
Definitely do not buy this TV. Due to the lackluster ability of the local dimming, brightness and color HDR will look horrible. Even just watching SDR will underperform due to bad contrast and edge lit backlighting. TCL and Hisense have seriously outclassed Samsung and LG in the LED LCD market which makes sense since Samsung and LG have almost completely shifted focus to OLEDs.

All will be explained in the text, but basically, the local dimming doesn’t do anything as far as actually dimming zones. It boosts brightness and contrast a bit, but there’s relatively little blooming since all zones are almost always on.
Will wait for the review to post but curious if there are any differences between the 85 and the 85T that stand out? I couldn’t find anything about what made this a “T” (specifically in the 55" range - I see the prelim post says it’s a VA but i think the regular 85 is an IPS?)

The “T” signifies it’s part of the 2024 lineup. The major differences are the 85 uses direct lit backlighting with local dimming while the 85T uses edge lit backlighting with local dimming. Indeed the 85 uses an IPS panel while the 85T uses a VA. Lastly the 85T seems to support HDMI 2.1 speeds for all four ports while the 85 only has two that support it.

Thanks! I know it’s not the most popular opinion around here but LG IPS panels work the best outside of OLED for the wide-angle viewing needed. Curious about the review, but that puts me back at the regular 85.

I would’ve definitely preferred a world where ADS(IPS) panels overtook the TV LCD market so we could enjoy wide viewing angles and faster response times while letting quantum dot layers and MiniLED handle contrast and color. There’s even a Linus Tech Tips video showing the 75 inch Samsung QN85A and they said it looked great compared to a 48 inch LG CX.

I dont want to live in that world mate. MiniLED is nothing other than local dimming. Local dimming can only enhance what is there, not do miracles. Compare it to playing a cheap guitar with unclean technique but plugging it into a 3000$ Marshall Amp. Thats your IPS Panel with an advanced backlighting. You can try to add some fancy distortion and effects but all the problems are still there, just louder.
Native contrast is extremely important, ips panels dont go higher than 1;1500 so they always look like shit. I pulled up the same sony nightsky demos in all the tvs in our store and every ips including the qned85 have an extremely soft picture. You never get the crisp image of a VA no matter how hard you mess with the backlighting.
Theres a reason why even the Bravia 9 which is worlds ahead in the backlighting still uses VA - its a necessity for a decent picture.

Yeah, the industry went with VA for that but if I have to accept having lower contrast than OLED then I would like better viewing angles and faster response times too. Also a big reason the Bravia 9 uses a VA panel is because most TV panels are coming from China. Lots of Samsung and LG TVs which used to have IPS are VA now.

Exactly. I’m not comparing IPS with VA in terms of quality. VA looks great when head-on. But the viewing angle is abhorrent and if you have a situation where you need one you just can’t do a VA.

I mean with VA - center viewers have a good picture, offangle viewers dont. With IPS, nobody has a good picture. If TV has to go in a corner get a swivel mount. 😂

With IPS, everyone has a decent picture. With VA, the one in the center has a great picture and for the rest it sucks. My TV is VA. I prefer IPS. Saw the NANO81T in the store, so nice to have a picture that is not significantly degraded from the side. I just want a Mini LED IPS option, and from the current models (not older models whose stock will run out like QN90C) only the 75 inch Hisense have that but those are too big.

Rest In Peace, ADS(IPS) panels. New innovation is coming from Chinese manufacturers though. Apparently TCL CSOT had a breakthrough with WHVA panels which aim to solve the viewing angle problems of VA. FlatPanelsHD has a video.

Wondering is there any LG’s lcd tv worth buying in recent years?
The QNED90 from 2021 was impressive. It was cheaper than an A1 OLED at launch, can reach contrast similar to the Bravia 7 and the 86 inch model had about 2500 zones.
The results of this review are exceptionally disappointing. The QNED85 (previous version) has an overall rating of 7.9 using methodology 1.11. The QNED85T (apparently the “T” stands for turd) could only muster a 7.2 using the same methodology. Now compare this to LG’s entry level models like the UT8000 and UR8000. Both those units scored a 7.1 (with a 60Hz native resolution no less). You can argue the minutiae for each subcategory, but at the end of the day, this model is a sad sad replacement for the QNED85. This is even worse than their Nano TV’s from a few years back. At least those were never appreciably better than the entry level models. If you feel tricked, it’s because your supposed to.

The qneds dont score better than the entry level models because thats as much as you can get from an edge lit tv. I have no idea why they dony put a proper backlighting on those.

It’s cheap to use edge-lit backlighting. Also, LG has very little interest in LED LCDs even more so since Samsung released QD-OLEDs and TCL is preparing to release inkjet printed RGB-OLEDs.

here’s the thing: the QNED85T isn’t a direct replacement for the QNED85. rather, it replaced the 2023 version of the QNED80 [model number ending in URA]. LG probably gave it a five-digit increase because they thought it was a legitimate upgrade and also to deceive customers—which is terrible.
I just saw the QNED 85 2024 model on display at BB in town and it is a beast with eye popping contrast and colors and vg brightness . Overall excellent balance of virtues , it would be worthwhile to see if it’s better than the previous model . I believe it is . As good as competing models price wise ?

It’s not necessarily cheaper but allows to make the TV thinner. The article on their durability on this site mentioned it’s probably more expensive even to make edge lit than direct lit. The cheapest TVs like for example Hisense A6 are actually direct lit. And brands like Hisense, TCL, european Philips, Sony, Vizio they don’t use edge lit at all (except for oddballs like the NXTFRAME) and some of them have cheaper models than Samsung or LG.
I don’t understand how this is technically supposed to replace QNED85, it seems to be a lot worse..?
Hey there. It definitely performs a lot worse than the QNED85, and is more comparable to the QNED80 2023. Even then, LG has switched to VA panels for most of their 2024 QNED lineup (except for the 86" models), so it’s not a one to one comparison. Although most people would likely take a VA panel over an IPS one, it was kind of nice that the QNED85 used an IPS panel with a wide viewing angle and still had solid contrast, which kind of made it stand out a bit in the crowd. Thanks for reaching out!
