Can you share a graph of the best treble accuracy achieved by adjusting eq?
Can you share a graph of the best treble accuracy achieved by adjusting eq?
Unfortunately, we don’t currently provide custom EQs. We do this for a few reasons, but mainly because personal taste in sound is subjective, and can vary wildly from one user to another. We also do not want to give the wrong impression by saying the Custom EQ is the best sound (mixed with point). Sorry about that!
All good! Just curious how much the custom EQ boosted the treble. I’m not in the market for these specific earbuds, but it would be useful to know in general how much EQ makes a difference so I can determine if they would compensate for my hearing loss.

Hey, Bose is pretty vague about their equalizers, which is often fine for general listening. We don’t currently have the resources to test the EQ extensively, unfortunately. However, you can adjust the Treble, Mids, and Bass by up to ‘10’ in either direction from neutral, as demonstrated in the screen recording of the app about 50 seconds in. Without testing, I can’t say if those increments represent decibels or perceived loudness. The EQ also doesn’t indicate which specific frequencies are impacted, which can be annoying, especially if you know which frequencies you need to be compensated for hearing loss.
All that said, some manufacturers, like Sennheiser and Anker (for instance), tend to provide more detailed equalizers with information like decibels and specific frequencies in their higher-end models. Some models, like the Nothing Ear (2) Truly Wireless, include both an equalizer and a custom hearing mode to alter the EQ in response to a hearing test, and you can adjust the resulting EQ to suit your taste. I figured I’d just throw that in there if you want something more comprehensive. Thanks!
Update: We noticed that remapping controls and then putting the buds back into their carrying case reset these settings, so we’ve added a note to Controls. We’ve also added a note about the buds’ high noise floor in Sound Profile and detailed our connectivity issues with the companion app in App Support, lowering the score of this test. Finally, we found an issue which affects the Passive Soundstage and Leakage scores in this review. The microphone used in this test produced a response lower than expected, artificially boosting the scores. After investigating the issue, we’ve retested this affected product and updated our review.
Newer firmware has been released since these were originally tested. It’s supposed to include fixes for the microphone pickup, particularly when background noise is present. It’s also apparently supposed to fix the high noise floor you reported. Will you be able to test to see how the new firmware performs? Thanks!

Hello beefjerky9,
We will look into this firmware update and make the necessary changes to the review (if required) in a timely manner. David
Update: We’ve converted this review to Test Bench 1.8, which updates our target curve and Sound tests. You can read more about this in our changelog.
Had to make an Rtings account just to reply to this:
The sound measurements for this earbud are wrong. There was probably a fitment issue of some kind (I had this issue initially as well, the trick is to make sure that the “bud” is placed firmly against the bottom of the ear. If it’s suspended in the air, there is 0 bass and it is horribly honky and trebly)
I verified my sanity by using jaak’s AutoEQ on my APP and normalizing it to the curve here. The curve here sounds nothing like the Bose Opens that I have.

Hi there, Thank you for reaching out. We tried several placements to on the B&K 5128.
Would it be possible for you to show us a RAW FR of the measurements you got?
Cheers, Dagobiet.

My Experience-Bose Ultra Open Earbuds:
Sound - superb. Crystal clear and good volume. Love the immersive option. Making and receiving phone calls- Excellent. Much better than most phone-capable earbuds. Microphone works very well. People I am talking to are pleasantly surprised when I tell them I am speaking on these earbuds. Battery life - adequate. “Fit” - poor. Yes they are comfortable. But NOT for sports or other active movements like climbing or descending stairs. They constantly fall out of my ear despite being fitted as recommended and adjusted,
Great for sitting at a desk for use like a hands-free speakerphone or listening to music . For sports, bicycling etc.? Forget it.
