The Chefman TurboFry air fryer (5-qt.) is a compact model with enough capacity to cook for about 2-3 people. This mid-range model has a simple design, with a few "Air Fry" presets for different foods like fries and fish, but no fan speed adjustment and a narrow temperature range, making it less versatile than some options. It's best suited for crispy fried foods like chicken wings and french fries and includes a "Shake Reminder" to help you remember to shake your food partway through cooking.

Our Verdict

7.2 Air Frying

The Chefman TurboFry air fryer (5-qt.) is a decent model. It's fast, and while it doesn't have the best air frying performance, it makes satisfactory, if somewhat undercooked, fried foods like french fries, Brussels sprouts, or chicken wings. Unlike many air fryers, it doesn't have multiple fan speeds for different methods, like dehydrating.

Pros
  • Cooks quickly.
  • Shake reminder feature.
  • Makes decent-quality fried food.
Cons
  • Somewhat small cooking surface area.
  • Doesn't maintain a stable temperature.
7.1 Large Batch Cooking

The Chefman TurboFry air fryer is a 5-qt model, so it's best suited for cooking for 2-3 people. Its basket has a decent amount of surface area for you to spread your food out in a single layer, but some 5-qt models have more surface area, which can improve frying quality. That said, it has a satisfactory performance and cooks food quickly.

Pros
  • Cooks quickly.
  • Makes decent-quality fried food.
Cons
  • Somewhat small cooking surface area.
  • Doesn't maintain a stable temperature.
7.2 Frying Performance

The Chefman TurboFry air fryer (5-qt.) has decent air frying performance. It's a compact model with a fairly small cooking surface area and a somewhat slow maximum fan speed. It produces decent-quality fried food like chicken wings or fish but leaves many undercooked and under-crisped portions. It doesn't maintain a stable temperature very well, which makes it more difficult to follow recipes precisely. However, it cooks food quickly.

Pros
  • Cooks quickly.
  • Makes decent-quality fried food.
Cons
  • Somewhat small cooking surface area.
  • Doesn't maintain a stable temperature.
8.1 Cooking Speed

The Chefman TurboFry air fryer (5-qt.) is a fast model. It preheats and cooks food quickly.

Pros
  • Cooks quickly.
Cons
7.0 Cooking Capacity

The Chefman TurboFry air fryer (5-qt.) has a decent cooking capacity. With a 5-qt capacity, it's not a big model and best suited for serving 2-3 people at once. However, its round basket doesn't have a huge surface area for arranging food in one layer.

Pros
Cons
  • Somewhat small cooking surface area.
7.7 Size

The Chefman TurboFry air fryer (5-qt.) is quite compact. It's tall but has a relatively small footprint, so it's not a bad choice for cramped kitchens.

Pros
  • Compact design.
Cons
  • 7.2 Air Frying
  • 7.1 Large Batch Cooking

Differences Between Sizes And Variants

The Chefman TurboFry air fryer (5-qt.) comes in one color: 'Black.' You can see the label for the unit we tested.

If you encounter another variant, let us know in the comments, and we'll update our review.

Compared To Other Air Fryers

The Chefman TurboFry air fryer (5-qt.) is a compact, simple model. It has only one fan speed and a relatively small temperature range, so it's not as versatile as some other air fryers, like the 5-qt Ninja Pro AF141 or the 5.5-qt Ninja Max XL AF161. It has presets for different food items instead of for different cooking methods like baking, and it's best suited for classic air fry recipes like french fries, roasted vegetables, or fish. Unfortunately, it also has a somewhat worse performance since a significant portion of fried food comes out undercooked and not crispy enough.

If you're looking for a recommendation, check out our lists of the best air fryers, the best small air fryers, and the best budget and cheap air fryers.

The simplest explanation is that the sound quality will remain unaffected by matching or mixing brands. There is no need to worry about that aspect. Manufacturers do have some features that will only work within their own ecosystems. Not many, however. These are mostly meant as a marketing ploy to get you to buy more of their devices. Some features, such as using the TV speaker as the center channel, will degrade your sound experience, and therefore we do not recommend using them if sound performance is your main objective.

Would it be possible to test Apple TV + couple of HomePods 2 in stereo mode and comparing it into the soundbars section?

Hello Aenaryon, We did purchase a second unit, which we evaluated as a stereo pair. The unusual setup makes it difficult to include as a soundbar review, and interest wasn’t high enough to prioritize over other popular products. Ultimately, we decided to add our impressions in the soudstage and app sections of the speaker review.

It wasn’t available when the Aurvana Ace 2 first launched, but Creative have since launched the BT-W6 dongle, that they advertise as compatible with the Aurvana Ace 2, and supports LE Audio - in particular the low-latency GMAP profile for gaming. I’ve heard (but not from anywhere that trustworthy) the Aurvana Ace 2 supports GMAP, and I’d be really interested to see what latency looks like with the BT-W6.

We ordered one. Thanks for the tip. Stay tuned!

I’ve seen something about that recently on YouTube (Ceonthemaking). Apparently, the microphones do isolate external noise, but to record it, you need to call yourself. A vocal note or recording the call via an app would not activate the noise reduction. Have a look at that video!

Hello Nikotttin, Indeed, very interesting. Thanks a lot for pointing it out. We’ll definitely take a look.

Hello and thank you for this information! The question I have is what exactly does the AVsync feature in the soundbars app do? Based on this article I understand that you can not fix audio being late, you can only delay sound but not the picture. However on most modern TVs the picture will be ahead so how does it work? For example your review of the Sony Bar 8 shows a high audio latency, 100ms+. In the description you wrote “you might want to compensate for the high latency by manually adjusting the avsync correction in the app”. I dont understand how that fits with the information in this article. If the problem of the bar 8 is bringing the audio way late while my tv has a 5ms input lag all hope is lost right? I cant get those 2 synchronized properly if it is not possible to delay the picture? Just a bit confused hope you guys can help :) EDIT: To add to this, I also dont understand how it is possible that using the soundbars hdmi passthrough doesnt increase input lag. So my TV in game mode 120fps deliverd the picture in 8ms. The AVsync error you messured lets say with the LG s95R is 0ms. That means video and audio are in sync, there is no input lag added so the sound has to be coming out in 8ms as well for that to make sense right? However the audio latency is somewhere around 50ms on that same bar. I dont get how switching the order of devices makes that make sense. Either the bar has to be suddenly superfast or the tv slower than before.

    Hi meesbaker,

Thanks for your question! The A/V Sync feature on the Sony Theater Bar 8 can only delay audio from the Soundbar. You can add 0 to 300ms of delay to the soundbars output, so if your audio is already delayed compared to your TV, you can’t reduce it below that for better sync between the two. We’ll take a look at the explanation we give in the review to clarify this for the future!

As for a suggestion to minimize A/V sync delay, using the HDMI-In port from your Source to the Soundbar and then to the TV is probably your best move for reducing latency. It’s worth noting that AV-Sync error is more perceptible when audio leads video, so a slight delay between Video and Audio won’t cause a dramatic perceivable lip-sync error for most.

The combination TV/Soundbar brand does not really matter. We didn’t test this combination, but the rule of thumb is that using the TV as a center channel degrades performance. Especially true for higher-end products. If you’re budget conscious, I would go Q990C (last year’s) if still available. Also take a look at the Q930C or Q930D. You get comparable performance for less money.

What is the recommended sub setting? Should I enable Virtual X or TruVolume?

Hello Punisher1_1995, You can find this info in the “Stereo Frequency Response With Preliminary Calibration” section of our review. We suggest a bass setting of -4 and leaving the subwoofer level at the default setting. Bear in mind that the calibration values are specific to our testing room, and your preference or room may differ. Enabling DTS Virtual X is a personal preference as well. It will simulate the effects of surround sound, and can provide an enjoyable experience for some content. It can nevertheless sound unnatural on some content. TruVolume can help with annoyingly loud commercials, for example, if that’s an issue distracting you. If your intention is optimal dynamic performance, however, then I suggest not enabling it. Have fun!

What’s the difference between TR and QR in these LG soundbars?

So does that mean if it had of been enabled it would have scored better or should it be retested because their is a massive difference between the two settings. I feel that there is a bit of bias to the sound bar because it is designed for a TV and not a music player. Cheers

Here is Sony’s explanation of the Advanced Auto Volume feature: “This setting automatically adjusts the volume to a fixed level that matches to the volume changes of the broadcast and input signal. It’s an effective setting when for instance, the volume of commercials feels louder than the volume of the program.” It is not meant to boost the bar’s performance. We calibrate to a fixed volume for our measurement anyway, and it wouldn’t increase the maximum volume either. It’s meant to be a convenience feature. If you aim to extract maximum performance from the bar, I suggest leaving this setting off.

Hi there, In your review did you adjust any of the sound settings? Because under audio settings when you turn on advanced auto volume it doubles the speaker output at half the volume. Cheers

Hello Johncam, This setting was not enabled when we tested, but we mention the feature in the “Sound Enhancement Features” section. Please note that Sony indicates that the “Advanced Auto Volume function is not suitable for listening to music.”

Stereo pairing is available on both of these speakers (your review states that the speakers don’t have this feature), and improves the sound quality considerably.

Hello Addgravity, We mention the presence of a physical button to create a stereo pair in the text. However, the app itself does not include that function. Sorry for the confusing data. We’ll make sure to address this point next time we update our speaker test bench.

Does passing audio through the soundbar first mean you could play Dolby Atmos content with a tv that doesn’t support Atmos passthrough? In the sense that you would be able to bypass the restriction since the audio is sent to the soundbar first and doesn’t need to passthrough the tv or will it still not work unless every connected device is Atmos enabled

Hello edward88, You are correct. What the TV supports or does not support does not impact the bar’s capability when using passthrough. In fact, you could connect your source to the bar and the bar to a projector, which typically does not even have speakers, and the bar would still output Dolby Atmos if it supports it.

Did yall connect the soundbar to the smart things app? If so, what settings/mode did yall use or turn on/off? My Q990D, no matter what settings I turn on or off, is severely lacking high bass compared to even my jbl boombox 3, the high bass sounds super strained and small and is mostly coming out of the bar itself while the subwoofer barely makes a sound(trust me it’s not my room acoustics, I practically put my face on the subwoofer) , and plays unpleasantly loud for the lowest frequencies(I’m aware it could be cuz of room acoustics but I brought it outside my house and it had the same characteristics as inside my doorstep. My subwoofer placement should be good as well due to the ports being well away from walls and making sure it’s not a dead spot using the subwoofer crawl, crawling around, only volume of bass deviates but high bass just never appears) . My LG SP9YA, though it didn’t have as good of a low bass extension, it’s high bass was super punchy and tight and sounds super good for music, whereas the Q990D is great for the music as well but is severely disappointing in the high bass department. The sad part about this is that the eq bands don’t go as low as the subwoofer frequencies so I can’t do anything about it, I noticed your frequency response measurements also show the around 60-70hz drop as well as the 300-400hz crater too and yall didn’t seem to comment on that. These ruins the soundbar performance for music imo, especially the 60-70hz crater, whereas the 300-400hz crater is less observable. If yall have any advice to rectify this it would be great. Also looking for more info about adaptive vs standard as I feel like adaptive mode ruins the clarity of voices in songs, but that’s less noticeable in movies while also being compensated by the much more immersive surround sound and height channel realism. Thanks a lot!

Hi SeriesXPro, We did not have the same experience with our unit. I suggest you try a factory reset or contact the manufacturer. As far as which sound preset to use it comes down to user preference. I would use what sounds best to you on various content. I hope this helps.

This speaker has a problem with decoding buetooth. The pitch is shifted up for about 7 second when I play a song for the first after a while. I tried with with my phone and my PC, I tried changing the bluetooth codec, but it always does it. Because it is super annoying to me, I do not recommend buying this speaker. Buy the old Srs-xb12 instead.

Hello Helpy, We have not encountered this issue with our unit. I suggest you try a factory reset to see if it fixes it. While the speaker is turned on, press and hold the – (volume) button and the BLUETOOTH button until the speaker turns off (5 seconds or more). There might also be a firmware update for the unit that you can perform using the Sony Music Center app. Hopefully, one of these tips can help you fix your problem. If not, try contacting the manufacturer.

I had a quick question. I know that this soundbar connects wirelessly to samsung TVs, but I was wondering about DTS support with that feature. I understand that modern samsung TVs (like the S90D) don’t support DTS audio passthrough, but since this can wireless connect does that bypass the TVs lack of support? In essence, if you connected this soundbar to the S90D wirelessly rather than with HDMI, will it support DTS audio formats? I’m also curious if you were able to test the latency with this wireless connect? If so, was there any lip syncing issues or was the delay imperceivable? I appretiate any help with this.

Hi Chief-exe, Today’s products have loads of features and we try to limit the number of tests we do, otherwise it would take forever. In this case, whether or not wireless DTS is supported is a reasonable question. We, at the very least, want to know how a new technology is behaving and this is a blind spot in our knowledge. We’ll try to get an answer soon but we can’t promise anything as the team is quite busy at the lab. Hope you understand.

Hey admin, what device did you use to test the video pass-through to tv from the soundbar ? My pc has an intel i5 11th gen with iris xe graphics. When plugged into HDMI IN port of the soundbar with a hdmi 2.1 cable, Display section in windows settings only allows me to select 1080p resolution but not 4k. Intel graphics command center shows the device is capable of 4k@60HZ but not sure why the soundbar is not accepting 4k video from the pc. By any chance could you confirm if you can get 4k video pass-through from soundbar to tv when pc is used as an input source to the soundbar? Thanks

Hello jomipeh923, We did not encounter any issues connecting a 4K PC source. The HDMI protocol is very finicky. From our experience swapping the cable (sometimes several), even if your current cable meets the requirements, has proved to be the solution working most often for this type of issue. Hope this helps.

Hi, do you have vertical and horizontal directionality plots available? Also, given how strange Sony’s EQ tends to be, do you have measurements of that as well? The same information would be valuable for the XB33 counterpart as well, as I’m curious about the waveguide effects. . Thanks.

Hello realjuan, Unfortunately, we do not have the info for the vertical directionality. We try to test in the way most buyers would use the product. In this case, having a bit of stereo separation, while the speaker is positioned horizontally, it felt like the appropriate choice if you care about the soundstage. I did a quick subjective check and the directivity is somewhat worse when vertical. Especially in the voice and treble range. You also lose the stereo separation. This speaker definitely benefits from being aimed at the listening position. Also, Thanks for bringing up the EQ concern. We’ll certainly be checking for this on future products from Sony. Cheers.

Thanks for the reply, I have an lg soundbar where there is a function that says it is possible to leave surround sound in all the mouths of the soundbar, will this function create a multichannel stereo coming out of all the mouths or is it precisely this virtual surround sound that is not worth it?

Any native stereo content up mixed to multi-channel is technically virtual. In the case of multi-channel stereo, it’s slightly different as less processing is applied. It’s still not as the artist intended, however. It all comes down to what you prefer. Whether you like how it sounds or not is all that matters.

I was wondering if your test result is out dated for hdmi 2.1 connectivity or is it the LG site that is wrong. https://www.lg.com/us/sound-bars/lg-s95qr-sound-bar#pdp_specs Bluetooth Yes HDMI 2.1 (HDCP 2.2) Input 2 HDMI 2.1 (HDCP 2.2) Out 1 LG TV Sound Sync (Optical) Yes Optical Input Yes USB Host Yes Wi-Fi Yes Wireless Active Subwoofer Yes

Hi raphaelbudd, Although the bar is advertised to have multiple HDMI 2.1 ports, they don’t have the bandwidth to support 4k @ 120hz. Some manufacturers like to claim compatibility without fully implementing all the spec features. We only do so when the full bandwidth is met. We made a YouTube video about it if you’re interested.

Hello colvero1, Upmixing stereo to surround can be hit or miss depending on the content and the ability of the product to do a good job of it. I would say that most people prefer to listen to regular music in stereo to stay closer to the way the artist/mixer intended. When you get a good and genuine 5.1 source recording, like a movie, it can make the room come alive. That’s when it’s worth it.

Is it possible to raise the volume levels of the satellite speakers with an amplifier without blowing the speakers up? How will that affect the score?

Hello Jason, The bar has a Surround Level Adjustment function. It allows you to emphasize the presence of the surround effect if so desired. The bar’s uneven surround frequency response is the main issue hampering the score. It’s unlikely that adding more power would help much in that regard. Although it is possible to add an amplifier if you’re a tinkerer, it would be awkward to use on a regular basis. There would be several devices to turn ON and adjust. Blowing up the speakers would imply that you went way too loud for comfort which would be unlikely. I hope this clears things up.

So you mean dolby digital plus is the compressed Dolby atmos?

Correction and clarification for our previous message. Dolby Digital Plus is a compressed version of the master recording. (Online streaming services: Netflix, Disney+, etc) Dolby TrueHD is the lossless uncompressed version of the master recording. (Blu-ray disks) Where Atmos comes into play is to add data describing a more precise location of sounds in the mix. The same data can be added to Dolby Digital Plus or Dolby TrueHD Lossless. Atmos is affecting the soundstage portion of the audio. It is an object-based mixing process for a more precise and believable bubble of sound (including above your head when equipment is capable). Atmos theoretically does not affect the sound quality of the elements heard, only their position in space.

Hi Team, Do you know what happens if you use this soundbar without the sub and rear speakers? Does the bar already have an integrated sub and will sound which is supposed to go to the rears come out of the bar instead (when watching 5.1 content for example)? Based on reviews, I’m thinking of getting this to use the soundbar alone without the sub and rears as I don’t have enough space. It’s either this or the Vizio M213AD-K8 (aio) or the Bose 900 or Ultra. A Sonos Arc won’t fit under my 55” TV and am looking for the best bar without a sub or rears (and was thinking if this could be it, if I just don’t use its sub and rears) Thank you!!

Hi ryanrtings, The M512a-H6 is not meant to be used without the sub. I just tried it stand alone and it’s lacking in the bass department. It will also audibly complain that the sub is missing every time you turn it ON. Comparing the Vizios to the Bose offering is not a fair fight. Both the 900 and Ultra will offer more in pretty much in all aspects. The biggest difference will be the soundstage. They will be more immersive by a huge margin compared to the Vizios. Both of the Bose models you mentioned are very similar. You could get whichever one is cheaper. Hope this helps.

I appreciate your response. I have one last thing to ask you. Would you recommend for configuration of the system up in Windows as Stereo or 7.1 or Dolby Atmos For Home Theater? I’ll keep the Audio Enhancements off/disabled and let the soundbar system handle that.

You can set it to either 7.1 or Atmos. You should know this is dependent on the software used for playback. Some completely ignore this system channel mixing setting and will play your content in its original form which is a good thing since, in your case, the bar can handle everything.

I have the Q990c and it’s an amazing system, I was wondering if you guys could tell me what I should put my crossover for the system on for Windows 11 through HDMI. 80hz or 200hz under Bass Management? I set it up as not full range speakers because “Full Range” would mean without a subwoofer. Please let me know, I would like to know how I can set it up for best possible experience. Also if you guys have any recommendations on what is the best settings on Windows to make the system work as intended, then by all means don’t be afraid to let me know.

We recommend not enabling bass management in Windows and letting the bar handle its bass crossover. Manufacturers tune their products specifically to account for their driver size and capability. You can think of a sound bar as a receiver already set up to manage bass. Adding another layer on top would hinder its ability to properly process sound. Samsung already did a great job tuning the Q990C. Not much else is required to improve sound. Subwoofer placement and room acoustic treatment are more likely to provide an improvement than tuning the bar.

Question for the reviewers: How do you test which speakers are active in the Atmos (height) testing? It’s not that I question the results, I’m just curious how you do that?

We simply generate a periodic pink noise or sound sweep that is used to test the bar and listen for active drivers. Running our hand over the driver is sometimes required when several drivers are in the same area. It creates a certain distinctive sound when a driver is active.

Hi nukeroth, We unfortunately no longer have this model to verify the issue. However, many brands and models showcase this behavior. Most of the time it is to “enhance” the soundstage but not always to good effect. As you mentioned, using a different sound mode may be a workaround. We now check for this behavior on new reviews but were not doing so back when this model was reviewed.

What is the best audio cable connection to a recently released LG G4 smart tv OLED to the Sonos Arc sound bar for optimal home theater sound? What exact type of cable should I purchase?

Hello PaulVCarney, Any decently good quality HDMI cable will do the trick. No need to break the bank, however. The one that came with the bar is more than adequate. Sound signal bandwidth requirements are a lot less demanding than for a video signal. Using a more expensive cable will not provide you with any additional benefit. Hope this helps.

    Hello again RtingsUser6820457,

{Pure} and {Pro} settings are the names given to the different surround mode options. The difference between them is how much sound is redirected to the rear speakers (Pure is less, Pro is more)

    Hopefully, this answers your question.

Hi, For the LG S65Q Soundbar I have it as you recommended on Treble 3 and Bass -5, did you guys set the WF and C for calibration?

    Hello LaurelLParas,

Our preliminary calibration aims to achieve a more neutral sound profile by flattening the slope to an acceptable margin. We try to do this with only Bass and Tremble adjustments if possible, as this keeps the calibration process simple for users. Tweaking the Sub and Center levels could result in a sound more to your liking, but we did not use them in our calibration.

    Hopefully, this answers your question.

HDMI cable (4.9 ft / 1.5m) - hello, why you didn’t mention which version of HDMI it’s for included cable? Is it 2.1?

Hello vqa, Sony’s manual specifies “HDMI cable (supports the specification equal to Premium High Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet)”. The manual also clearly shows the back panel if you’re still curious. We’re talking internally to see if there’s a way we could improve the approach we showcase this.

Can it work like cable box -> non arc tv slot and then soundbar in arc can still get that audio even though the tv is on the input for the cable box?

Yes, ARC is exactly for that purpose. Let me know how it goes.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. We don’t know when we’ll be testing our next batch of toasters but we’re taking note of them for consideration.

Unfortunately, we’re not including toaster ovens just yet but it looks like a good one. Thanks for that.

bought this thing on recommendation from you guys. it sounds nice but freezes constantly, requiring a hard reboot where i actually have to unplug the thing for like an hour so the caps can drain. yes i flashed the latest firmware, issue remains. do you guys test against these products against cable boxes from comcast etc? i realize almost noone uses cable boxes anymore but now my mom is mad at me for getting her this thing because shes still doesnt know what an hdmi cable is and cant fix it when it freezes, so i hate the thing

Hi bryceamc, Sorry to hear about the issues you’re having. We have not experienced this problem during our testing. A few suggestions:

    • You could try a factory reset of both the bar and cable box. It often fixes misbehaving products for us. (And, yes, even after a firmware update)
    • The cable box could be the culprit. Is it possible to connect using the ARC of the TV or directly to the box? I don’t know your specific setup.
    • Try using the optical output of the box or TV. You might find there isn’t much of a sound quality difference.

If those don’t work, contacting the manufacturer for troubleshooting assistance or a replacement may also be a good option.

Hello Lucasan, We try to test combinations of bar configuration but it’s not always possible with our limited resources. We’ll keep that in mind. You can still infer some of the performance from the full review since it’s the same bass module and surrounds.

Hi Svodd, The product is, unfortunately, above our price limit of $1200 USD. If it ever dips below that threshold, we may consider it.

Our policy is to test on the latest firmware available at the time of testing. It would be confusing to most users if we downgraded several revisions as the majority would not do so. If the speaker comes to us on an older version, we may do a quick before and after frequency response check but we can’t promise anything.
