Apple MacBook Pro 14 (M3, 2023)
ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 (2024)
The Apple MacBook Pro 14 (M3, 2023) and the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 (2024) are very different devices, as the former is a workstation designed for professional workloads, while the latter is a gaming laptop that can handle some intensive productivity tasks. The MacBook Pro 14 provides a better user experience overall, as it has a sharper and brighter display, a larger and more responsive touchpad, and significantly longer battery life. If you only use the laptop for CPU-intensive productivity tasks, you can get more performance out of the MacBook Pro 14, especially the higher-end configurations with an M3 Max SoC. However, the G14 is still a better option for gaming, as there are far more games on Windows, and the NVIDIA GPUs have better game drivers and more features like DLSS and Frame Generation. The G14 also has a faster display response time and G-SYNC support to reduce ghosting and screen tearing.

Confused by the 2.5hr video playback battery life… surely a mistake in the article, or tested with a dud battery.
Hey!
So I went back to give it another shot yesterday (since it was presumably only a 2.5 hour battery). I can confirm that it lasts about 2.5 hours when on our video playback test. I did a bit more digging and noticed that the CPU was essentially on blast the entire time from when I start the video. I tried going online and playing videos on Youtube and Netflix (on the browser) and noticed it was not acting the same way and was using much less power.
It seems on this model, our video playback test (which is VLC + video on loop) causes the CPU to go straight to heavy load, which is why the video playback result is extremely close to the gaming result.
Update: Added mention of the Acer Chromebook Plus 514 (2023) as an alternative with longer battery life in the Battery section.
