If you have high humidity levels in your bedroom, it's worth investing in a dehumidifier. Finding the right unit for your bedroom requires a few special considerations. Quiet operation is a must since you'll likely run the unit overnight. You'll also want something that doesn't put out too much heat so your bedroom doesn't get hot and stuffy. Nice-to-have features include 24-hour timers and real-time fan speed adjustment systems, as these help you avoid fiddling with settings throughout the night.
We've tested 20 portable dehumidifiers, and below are our recommendations for the best ones for bedroom use. We consider their dehumidification performance, price, and feature sets. If you're looking for another set of product recommendations, you can see our picks for the best dehumidifiers, the best dehumidifiers for basements, and the best small dehumidifiers. The Waykar PD160B is the best bedroom dehumidifier we've tested. While this unit's 8.5-pint capacity certainly is far from the highest we've tested, it's still an ideal option for the majority of bedrooms. It has a discrete footprint compared to a lot of higher-capacity units, and its operating noise will easily fade into the background of most homes or apartments. It also generates very little heat, so you can have it near your bed without feeling a constant flow of warm, dry air against your face. You can set your desired humidity level and have the unit adjust its fan speed setting automatically, so there's no need to babysit the machine while it runs.
Although there's no built-in pump to drain the water into an elevated receptacle, it has a hose for continuous drainage. Its display is rather dim: this can be a nuisance when trying to operate the machine, but the upside is that it doesn't emit a harsh light that'll disturb your sleep. Unfortunately, this unit is likely insufficient for removing moisture from exceptionally large, open-concept rooms. For big bedrooms, check out the Frigidaire FFAP5034W1 below!
If you have a large bedroom that requires heavy-duty dehumidification, the Frigidaire FFAP5034W1 or one of its variants is a great option, as it has a 50-pint capacity and large water bucket. Its built-in drain pump lets you drain it into an especially faraway container vessel or sink. At 560W, this unit consumes far more energy than the other picks on this list, but its considerably higher dehumidification capacity makes it just as efficient in terms of performance per watt. The downside is that it's significantly louder than the Waykar PD160B. It also puts out much more heat, so smaller rooms will start to feel pretty stuffy if you leave it running often.
If you only need a dehumidifier to deal with small amounts of moisture inside an enclosed space, like your bedroom closet, consider the ProBreeze PB-03 or one of its variants. It's approximately one-sixth the weight of the already pretty compact and lightweight Waykar PD160B, so you can easily put it on a shelf in your closet or any other tight space. It generates very little heat, so you won't notice any real impact on the temperature of your room, even if you leave it running all the time.
Unfortunately, this unit doesn't offer anywhere near the dehumidification capacity of a full-size machine or even a more compact unit like the Waykar. As a result, it'll do a terrible job of dealing with high levels of moisture, even within modestly sized rooms. The ProBreeze also has a tiny water tank, but since its dehumidification rate is so low, it takes quite a while to fill up. It draws only 37W of power, which is great if you plan on having it run overnight often, but its poor capacity means it isn't an energy-efficient option either.
It's worth noting that the PB-03 can be a little difficult to find at some retailers. If you're still in need of a compact dehumidifier, check out the ProBreeze PB-02, which is an even smaller unit. Naturally, its more compact size means it has a smaller 9-ounce capacity and a 0.1-gallon (0.5L) water tank.
