The GE APYR50LC is a 50-pint dehumidifier intended for use in larger rooms. Its Smart Dry function allows it to automatically change its fan speed setting depending on ambient humidity. It also boasts a 1.7 gal (6.6 L) water tank, along with a built-in pump for draining accumulated moisture into faraway or elevated containers, and an Energy Star rating of 1.8L/kWh.

Our Verdict

8.4 Basement

The GE APYR50LC is great for basement use. Its dehumidification capacity is very high, making it a good option even for larger, open-concept basements. It can be set up to drain continuously, which is great for longer usage sessions. It features a drain pump that allows it to pour out any accumulated moisture into a faraway floor drain or elevated container.

Pros
  • Excellent dehumidification capacity.
  • Wide range of airflow from fan speed settings.
  • Great energy efficiency.
  • Has a drain pump.
Cons
  • Noisy while running.
7.6 Bathroom

The GE APYR50LC is good for use in bathrooms. It might be a little too large for tighter bathrooms and rather noisy, but it does offer excellent dehumidification capacity, enough for big, humid bathrooms. It can also be set up for continuous drainage and features a drain pump, so you can have it pour out any accumulated moisture into a sink or any high-walled tub.

Pros
  • Excellent dehumidification capacity.
  • Has a drain pump.
Cons
  • Releases quite a bit of heat.
  • Noisy while running.
  • Somewhat bulky.
7.8 Large Room

The GE APYR50LC is very good for use in large rooms. At its highest fan speed, it's more than capable of circulating the air in wide open spaces and offers excellent dehumidification capacity to boot. It's also impressively energy-efficient, so it won't be too big a hit on your power bill. Unfortunately, it's rather noisy and can be a distraction if you leave it running while watching TV or if you have guests over.

Pros
  • Excellent dehumidification capacity.
  • Wide range of airflow from fan speed settings.
Cons
  • Noisy while running.
5.8 Bedroom

The GE APYR50LC is sub-par for bedroom use. It's noisy and emits quite a lot of heat if left to run for an extended period, making tighter bedrooms feel quite stuffy. On the upside, it offers excellent dehumidification capacity, sufficient for even large bedrooms.

Pros
  • Excellent dehumidification capacity.
  • Great energy efficiency.
Cons
  • Releases quite a bit of heat.
  • Noisy while running.
  • Somewhat bulky.

Compared To Other Dehumidifiers

The GE APYR50LC is a 50-pint portable dehumidifier. It's great for bigger rooms thanks to its high airflow and excellent dehumidification capacity, but unfortunately, it makes more noise and emits more heat than a lot of other alternatives with similar capacities. Its Smart Dry function is a bit of a unique selling point, enabling it to cycle through its fan speed settings depending on current humidity levels.

This dehumidifier offers good overall airflow performance. It boasts a very wide airflow range, which can help provide a bit more flexibility depending on the ambient humidity in different parts of your home.

At its highest speed, it can generate high levels of air movement in bigger spaces. Its lowest fan speed is slightly higher than many other dehumidifiers, which can be disruptive in confined spaces.
